Silent Hunter 4
« on: June 11, 2007, 06:45:15 pm »
I just got this off ebay for $25. It's a lot of fun. The controls are kind of funky but I like it.

Does anyone have a file with ship and sub statistics?

How far away from a ship do you need to be for the torpedo to arm? I think it's 500 yards, but I am not sure.

One more question. I have a mission where I am supposed to patrol off Honshu. I have traveled to the star on the map and crossed over the star several times. It still shows as mission incomplete. What do I have to do to complete the mission? Should I just return to port?

Thanks for your help!

Try sinking a few merchants, that will usually trigger that requirement.

You got it for 25? That's cool. I saw it at Best Buy and it's still 50 smackers, I guess it's why I keep passing. I'm sure the graphics are stunning as usual though.

I have sunk a boatload of them and it still shows as incomplete. I don't know what I need to do!

Don't you love it when that happens? I would e-mail Ubisoft support or check out their forums and see if there is a remedy.

For German torpedoes? 300 yards.

It's been a while since I played SH2, but I think that you're right with 500 yards.

SH4 uses American torps. I wish we had German ones. The early war American torps are terrible

Anyway, I solved my patrol riddle. You need to spend 48 hours with 100 nm of the star to complete the mission.

I attacked a convoy last night. I got 6 ships but used up almost all of my torpedoes in rough seas. Two of the ships were 5,000 tonners and the rest were 1800 tons. I need to work on my ship recognition. I think I put too many torpedoes into the smaller ships.

With early war American torps you never know what half of them will do. In my games almost exactly half of my torps have either gone off course or pre-detonated.

The one time I did have a full spread work right was on a big liner/troopship that I fired my last four fish at and I got the ship sunk message on the third torp and then about five seconds later I get another ship sunk message. I pop the scope back up and the escorts are still there so I take a look at the log and I got one of the life boats. Stupid idiots, you don't get off on the side of the ship that the attacks are coming from. :)

Aaaah man.  I'm getting this game soon.  Will I be gentlemanly, or will my AA gunners get a lot of...erm...target practice? ;D

Should I use the autocannon and '50's' on any sampans encountered as well, sir?

played alot of this for a while but got monotonous..

i do wish i'd had fraps running for the perfect shot i'd set up on a Battleship....not realizing i'd strayed to close.... i zoom in (i liked the pretty explosions so i always watched after commiting and firing) and see all 4 torps bounce right off the hull....  :'(

for patrol completions you need to stay with in 100nm of the star for 24 hours.. use the radius tool and set a silly pattern...

I can't help it.  I have to gloat.

I'd never even SEEN one of her kind in career mode up until the following....written sort of 'documentary style' for an email to a friend and fellow player.

---------------------

On May 11th 1943, the USS Balao was heading northward through the Makassar Straight near Balikpapan.  Receiving a message from SubSoWesPac of an IJN task group in the vicinity, she increased to flank speed toward the mouth of the straight and began to conduct radar sweeps.  At 2:12am, a large number of ships were directed heading toward the Balao's position at 12 knots.  The submarine set a course to intercept, submerging to 400 feet well in front of the task force.

Around 3 am, the Balao came to periscope depth, sighted many Japanese capital vessels, and pointed her bow toward the juiciest target.  Six torpedoes were fired, flank speed was called for, and as soon as the stern came 'round, four aft were also sent racing toward the target. All or nearly all hit the enemy vessel, which slowed to a halt.  The following photograph was taken just as the Balao began to dive in the face of a counterattack by six to eight IJN destroyers.

Though dark, Naval Intelligence was able to confirm that the Balao's target was a 62,000 ton Yamato type battleship.  Intercepts of coded Japanese radio traffic served to confirm the sinking, though the Balao's crew was quite able to hear the immense break-up noises as the leviathan headed for the bottom.

The submarine levelled off at 400 feet and endured two hours of depth charging, first by the entire task force escort screen, then by a pair of destroyers apparently left to make sure of her.  Though no damage resulted, enemy persistence kept the Balao under until well after sunrise, when she was finally able to surface and report her victory.

nice.. I have not seen one either in career mode.

I spend a day or three hunting for the Flying Dutchman ghost ship as posted on the SH 4 forums as well but no joy....

(there is one really well written encounter there, i'll have to see if i can find the link)
