Stones, stones and more stones.
« on: May 25, 2007, 10:34:51 am »
And what ive been upto again.

Needed cleaning (to the stupid, this needs to be done each spring so that farming epuiqment wont break)

From these (and just because someone will ask, the person to the left is the crazy catlady, good at work but crazy as hell. doesnt talk much about anything else than cats)

Some stones are big (way below surface) and wont come off without digging out of the ground. A quicker alternative is to flatten the sharp parts that poke out of the ground with the following method (left granpa, right dad):

Stone transport :D

And ofcourse, you just have to have a picture of me :P

Sheesh, I thought I had it hard with the winds tearing up my old barns. It's a shame we can't get that rock over here in the US, you could make a killing.

This land is cold and hard, we do our best to live off of it.

Savolaisen laulu (Song of Savonian)

Remembering in the mind of mine now
the sweet land of savo
its people whom suffered all
and been down with its luck
this dear, precious land!

High are its hills
Glorious are its glades
the peaceful are its valleys
and busy its groves
How dark its cradles

It's wilds how blue they are
How bushy its woods
And how the humming if the pines
is deep, proud and potent
and how winds are peaceful

And where do the stars shine
in the harshest of winters
and where the skies of the north
any sweeter
Than in the Skies of Savo?

Yes still I am remembering the one
its glimmering more dear
the eyes of the Savotar
Where the sky shining
connected its blue

Too much we dont brag
but we might as well tell
so Finland elsewhere should not mock
if we have a thin wallet
if we've been found to be poor

Often a field golden
glowed for you
when ours, worked over with with pain
was struck down by the enemy
and burned down to the ashes

And many times it happened
when the oppressions hit us
when the wifes and children were slain
when the men and husbands died in wars for you
you ate the bread of peace

If in tongues could tell
their sights the old trees
and our mounts sing
and our slopes whisper
with their words mouths of sounds

The many of them
good would be to prove
here the people of savo fought
and each nail went cold
for the land of finns

So lands, others I dont know
Anything more dear than Savo
And nothing else rings as loud
than what god created
Than the dear land of Savo!

As unofficial delegate of the stupids I'm interested in knowing where the rock come from every spring. If you remove all the rocks then plow and remove again, where do the rocks come from next spring?

To be honest, I wouldnt have the slighest idea :D
I quess it had to do with with the ice still receeding, the frost still pushes em up.

A whole lot of the arable land is old lakebed, hence stones.

I have to remove rocks from my fields every year. Most of it around here is sandstone and quartz. I use chains and a tractor plus my grandfather taught me how to find the fault in large boulders and split them.

As for the reason Mackie's family continues to have to remove rocks. My guess is that its one of two reasons. One, erosion. Even if you dont see it, wind and rain continue to remove the topsoil. Two, depending upon the type of rock, they could "float" to the surface. If Mackie lives in an area that was once volcanic, even if the region has been stable for millions of years, the rock could be porous. Freezing/thawing, combined with rain could, over time, cause the rocks to rise to the surface.

Where I live it is caused by erosion. I live in the piedmont of NC and there are alot of hills around here.

And for EE, heres a pic of very generic women. not too good not too bad :>

"It is very easy to fall in love with a Finnish woman, Finnish women are fully independent, they are commonly blondes, and occasionally they are also extremely beautiful. The Finnish society is very equal, women treated here like men, they also think they can drink as much as men, and of course, they can drink more then any foreign man, so be aware of that. Just don’t misunderstand the meaning of the freedom here."
