Dem der tomatoes 2007
« on: May 19, 2007, 08:19:15 am »
Yo NJ, where is this year's crop? I have two gardens going. One is at Leda's house, the other is the upside down thingy. You know how much upside down planters cost? Thanks to some guy on the internet that has a webpage on this stuff I made my own for a lot less and did not have to wait for shipping or nothing, he really did good and was correct, the plants are growing at warp speed. Rumor has it that before hydroponics came out, a certain green plant was turned upside down during the last days before picking to make it more potent. I do not know if that works.  ;)

Hmmmm, $18.99...

The planters you see on the balcony were bought at Wal-Fart for about 6 bucks, plus $2.99 each for my tomato plants (I got a late start this year, normally I plant from seeds). Hmmmmm, maybe I should make them and sell them for 10 bucks a piece, hehehehehe.

It gets really hot here in Texas man, so I imagine I'll never have those monster plants that you normally grow up in N.J., but at least I do like the Germans do, I like planting and growing my own stuff, no sense in paying for produce that is usually bought dirt cheap from Mexico anyways and sold to us Americans at H.E.B. for mucho dinero.

I also have lettuce and cucumbers and stuff growing in planters right now, then I will transplant to the ground at Leda's. It should make for a great lae summer/early fall crop.

I still haven't turned my soil, whole garden plot is overgrown with weeds right now. With two kids in the house now I get very little time to take care of outside chores. Last few weeks have been full of lending a hand with brother-in-laws do it yourself house addition. So, eventually, maybe late June, I'll just cheat a plant a whole bunch of full grown plants.  ;D

Till then Jack you're going to have to forge ahead with the planting. Really interested to see how those upside down planters work out.

At least you are helping out your brother in laws with important stuff man. Believe me, I'll keep you updated on the upside down thingy's. They really are a space saver and besides that the bugs will have a much harder time getting at them, hehehehehe...

I thought about you at H.E.B. yesterday, a small bunch of salad tomatoes (The sweet and juicy kind) cost $2.99 a packet!  :o That's a gallon of gas for you and me. My monthly water bill averages 20 bucks a month, roses and plants included, so what's another 2 bucks a month to grow my own tomatoes?

I'll take a pic of the tool and the pots I used, they are dirt cheap and very easy to make, and much better than that vinyl bag crap growers I've seen.

If you remember last year I was going to try that red colored ground netting at the base, but it seems I forget every year. Supposedly that stuff reflects the right colorwaves to encourage tomato growth and give it a more vibrant color.
