Romulan destroyer
« on: May 19, 2007, 05:03:45 am »
New Rommie destroyer hardpointed to use as the Skyhawk.
It might be of interest to some that I used my 3d software to do some of the textures. I added 3 light sources to the scene up under the neck shining back on the bird emblem and then rendered/baked the spotlights onto a texture to make the lightmap. I did the same thing with the reflections in the scene. Like the reflection of the nacelles onto the belly of the model.  I like how the effect came out better than when I create it in photoshop. Your milage may vary, of course. ;)

If Romulans aren't cowards, then why do they taste like chicken?

My wife says it looks like a vulture. I say it looks like a duck. Either way, awesome texture job!!!

I like your wife better than I like you. :P I'll take the props on the textures though.
For whatever it's worth, my wife thinks it looks like a pterodactyl.

Beautiful work.  Sincerely.

Just a bit over done on the "bird" look.

I agree the textures are awesome.

Woah woah woah, back the truck up here.  Dizzy's married?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!  *feels the sky falling*

Just kidding Dizzy.

That's is one nicely detailed Rommie.  The textures are sweet and neat.  Beautiful job.  What program you using?

I used Cinema 4D, Photoshop, and UVLayout (max 5 to export). C4D is the program that I used to render the spotlights on "the bird" and reflections with, if that's why you are asking. I believe that Max can do it also. There's a render to texture script. I think it's the same thing, but I'm not experienced enough with max to know for certain.

No, I meant what program did you use to make the ship itself.

Frack me. That has got to be one of the most amazing Romulan ships (and one of the best overall ships) I've ever layed my eyes on.

You'll hate me for saying so, but I agree on the duck issue. It's the long neck thing- vulture heads are almost right before the wings.

Shape aside, the texture job is killer, especially the forward part of the nacelles. Looks like a stablemate to the TMP Bird-of-prey had it been a Romulan ship, not a Klingon one.

Thanks a lot, Starforce. It's not all that, but I do appreciate it.

I can see the reference to a duck (or goose). Especially from underneath where the body looks pretty oval and wide. I don't mind the comparison. I was just messing with Dizzy. I think that the head, due to the lack of feathers, looks a bit like a vulture or pterodactyl also. I've had it compared to a crow (I can see that too) and even a dove (the dove I don't see at all, other than the oval body I guess?).
It might look a bit eclectic because I didn't have a certain bird in mind when I did it. I also made it to have Klingon influence. It would have been one of the 1st ships to be designed after the introduction of the Klingon D hulls to the Romulan fleet. The long boom is D hull influenced as are the swept back and down wings instead of a typical forward upswept Romulan design. The rear hull shape is taken from the b'rel. The twin booms, interior glows, and turned down beak are styling cues from the d'deridex and the melak (At least WZ's melak. It's the only one that I'm familiar with.)
I'm working on the frigate now. It's more classic Romulan. I should have it done in a few days.

The idea of the adopted Klingon boom was a nice touch. I didn't notice that before... and aside from your work here, the only time I've seen this taken into consideration (other than pure SFB models), was in the FeralYards' romulan section. Nice touch.

Well I've finally got to work on the BC version. How goes the other ship classes of this style?
