Do you use the models provided by OP+?
« on: May 13, 2007, 02:31:31 pm »
I am curious if most people choose to install the version of OP+ that gives you a bunch of models that I believe have not changed in some time.  I have always chosen the no models option.  It seems to me what we like about OP+ is the shiplist and not the models.  So if people are not really using or not liking them, then I'd suggest scrapping the whole model scheme that OP+ sets up and just use it as a proper shiplist with the entries in that list pointing to the default mod file just as in the default shiplist that Orion Pirates comes with.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3

I almost always choose the add models option with every install.  I don't care for some of the models, but overall I like the variety and think it adds to the enjoyment of the game. I would prefer the reliant model to be on more than just the miranda and some of the early era frigates don't appeal to me.

When I'm in the mood for TMP-style, yeah, I'll use the OP+4 models...

Usually though, I'm a TOS fan, so I tend to use a mix of the Fleetdock 13 and Desty Nova SFB-style models...

I went with the OP+ models, mostly because they bring a bigger variety to the game.  I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the Romulan models, but other than that I enjoy most of them.  Maybe we can convince some really clever person to do a pure TOS model pack for OP+.  The only time you'd spot a refit Connie is in the advanced era, which would start around the time of TMP.

I LOVE the OP+ models.   I've maybe swapped out 2 or 3 but that's about it.

I'm with you Lepton. The models should be scrapped. It's cheating. You arnt supposed to know what a ship has other than the apparent hull type at long range. Not till you get a closer sensor reading do you find out what it's armed with. With OPPlus models you get to see from afar exactly what the loadout type of the ship is just by hitting F4. Cheating. Course, since everyone does it, and some of these models are pure eye candy, hey why not. Can't beat em join em.

Bottom line for me is that since sensor readings arn't factored into any part of this game in any significant way, models are probably the way to go.

Thank you DIZZY.  I never knew about the F4 key till  just now.   That explains an awfull lot about why people knew what I had when I could not even see them yet.

That really only applies to the Federation where every ship it seems has a different model.  If you really wanted to scrap the models then we need to go in and edit the UI for a number of Klingon ships.  Some Dreads show the Carrier UI, even a couple of cruisers show the Carrier UI.  And of course the Klingon X2 Cruiser's UI is exactly the same as the standard Cruiser.

Pretty much my thoughts too... I wish the Miranda model was used on the CLC too, but overall I like the models.

Um... I guess that fleet screen that shows you exactly what ship you are up against should be disbanded also?

Wait a second, I thought Nuclearwessels latest Dynaverse compatible patrol missions hid the enemy ship identifiers until your ship scanners were actually in range to make an accurate assessment. Am I mistaken?

If the ship is over 100 away.... all you get is empty space to look at.... NuclearWessels didn't add that, it has been a feature since the begining.

I don't know if he implemented it inside the 100 range.... if so, I haven't noticed it.

Still, if you press and hold the 'nearest enemy' button.... you can once in a while pick up some tag info....

I always use the models. In fact, I would be nice to see a few more variants for most of the races, mainly the kings, roms, isc and gorn.
Feds seem to have a good variety, but I agree about the Miranda class for clc's.

New models are a great way to keep a "fresh" feel to an older game (see models for RDSL, for me this is the best campain I've played).

The models are nice, but I wouldn't mind seeing some nice, fresh textures on them.  Maybe swap out some of the models for better ones, and release a new models pack with just different models and new textures.

Okay, I'm not  a huge TOS fan. I like TMP era the best.  As such I replace 99% of my models to TMP ones, GASP!

Firesoul and his friends did an excellent job on OP+ but we need a cosmetic update for the Standard OP+ 4.0.

I think it's time for OP+ 4.0 to add different models for different races support elements. What I mean is all the fleet repair docks, free traders, Mobile Bases, defense posts, listening posts and star docks. Not every race will use the same ship yard, mobile base or listening post design...

Anybody ever see a Lyran stardock in an umodified OP+ 4.0 game that is not a STOCK XSD? There are a lot of low poly, high quality models from Terradyhne, SFC3  and ST: Armada conversion retextures at Battleclinic to update the OP+ model folder for ONLINE PLAY or even SOLO play without having to change the shiplist other than to give it a model to point to.

Selfish, SOB that I am, this in turn will at least keep me from having to add things like the "assets/models/rsd", etc. everytime I reload OP.

Just ranting...
