What Was Your Favorite Bit of the Server?
« on: April 29, 2007, 11:35:37 pm »
My favorite part of this server was the fact that most everyone seemed to be limited to a heavy or light cruiser.  It was nice to not have to deal with DNs all the time.  It also allowed destroyers to be really dangerous.

I lived every time I winged with Dizzy on this server.   Hell, we even got a fair amount of kills too.  I'm really gonna have to think about this.  The ramifications could be tremendous!!

Thought u said we were gonna leave Kroma out of this...

Well, my fav part of the server was Crim sticking his foot in his mouth concerning the WG. And I'll just keep my mouth shut till the fat lady sings and I have the complete server stats, but 1 of the 4 geese never switched sides. And 2 did a day and a half late at that. So we will see who was right and who was wrong. But 2nd funnest part of the server was sticking Hexx in a freighter in the middle of Klink space and changing his rank to Short Order Cook and his name to Napoleon.

Funnest part:

Being able to "race whore" while still flying my favorite race (ie, Rommie w/ ISC ships)

Other fun part:
Fairly relaxed CnC / fleeting rules.  I like flying heavier iron without too many worries about who I can / can't wing with, and the large "slot" kept small ships viable all server...

Part most hated:
Still too long a period of "attrition unit heaven", I hate fighters / PFs with a passion.  Not sure if my hatred of them stems from the fact that SFC doesn't include attrition BPV in the mission matching.  No matter what ship I'm flying, when I draw 150% of my sides BPV in carrier, which is packing 100% of my sides BPV in attrition units, going against a pure-line fleet, that's over 3-1 odds as plasma line ships never have adequate anti-fighter defense.
Either that, or my hatred stems from the fact that my fighters can be counted on doing exactly what I didn't want them to do, such as waste all phasers on a long-range shot when I specifically told them to "defend me" because I'm expecting way too many drones coming my way, or harassing fighters living right in effective AMD range...
Did I mention that I "grew up" on the concept that fighters are cheese, being that for the longest time my most viable fighter was the highly-loved Caveat III???

I'll be honest.  The only servers I enjoy late era on are those that jack up carrier BPV tremendously, so that I don't face fully loaded and escorted CVAs every mission with my CCZ...

Best part was as anticipated, that the guys on one side of the fence are just as nice to hang with as the guys on the other side of the fence.

Stock fighters on the ships now are speed 18 admin shuttles.  The have 1 PH3 and 6 Hit Points.   Is this really that bad?  I'm not being sarcastic as I agree that carriers appear WAY too often in the AI.  Shoulld I just make the Stock fighters admin shuttles?

Not sure if that's the way I'd want to see things go, especially when viewed under the light of encouraging line ship flight and / or overall balancing concerns.  I'll post some eye-popping numbers over in the Admin's corner later today...

Best part - Definitely the hour long fight against walleye. He demonstrated the perfect way to fly a CLC against a plasma ship even though he was eventually driven off.

Worst part - Far too many carriers and fighters far too powerful. I think both fighters need to be toned down and carriers harder to get. To be honest I wouldn't mind if they went entirely. Fighters need to go more with era a fighter in early or mid shouldn't be flying speed 30 because you don't have the energy to outpace them and still run with 1 or 2 weapons. Max speed 18 early 24 mid and 30 late max. And flew a carrier most of the server but I would have preferred to have been able to take a NCA or NCC or BCH and feel competitive and I don't think I could, especially with people in heavy carriers and dreads before much of mid era had gone.
I think a no fighter server would work well  though  ;D

My favorite part was my gutsy as move inbetween to BCH's 0_0 it worked, but only just... i could feel the galactic glue failing. i was in tatters, and Dizzy managed to kill llama at the last second :D

Got a LOT better over this server... too bad i couldnt play the last week of the server :(
Alternate universe:  Khan was banished for preserving the peace. The Genesis device was really a super weapon and kirk had planned to use it on the klingons. Chekov found the Botany Bay and khan hijakced and killed the evil reliant crew in an effort to destroy the genesis device.    Ahh i love it :D The alternate universe rocks.

1 of the 4 hardly ran any missions for us, either.
It's not like they were a nutter and then just quit playing.
At least 3 of the 4 spent a considerable amount of time on the server after they switched.
They scored kills and battled to hold back the tide of enemy players as best they could.
Far more than can be said of the WG on SGO6.  ;)
And again, the WG made little difference in the outcome.

When have having WG ever made a difference?
Ever even deployed without causing unrest...?
Maybe seeing a pattern here...?

Just a few players to wing with sustain a server. I'll answer it this way so you can understand. Duck won't ever quit a server where he's losing or outnumbered... unless there isnt anyone to wing with. That could have happened. At times the only players online were the WG...

So, if they havent ever made a difference as you suggest, then why the furor over their deployment? I think the true pattern we see is me attempting to balance player numbers without upsetting who is winning. I'm keeping players in the game by insuring the winning team has someone to fight. The ones who get pissed off and quit are part of the problem, but you never see anyone quit from the losing side when the WG are deployed. They relish the idea of having a wing to fly with. Now I suggest you play ball and stfu because if you havent been keeping up with current events, the direction these discussions have been taking is the alternative to WG is shutting the server down permanently. There is no good answer to an unbalanced server. But I think mine has little impact on who wins, but a nmajor impact on who stays. ;)

The "furor" is usually because players wanted to fly Race A and now have to fly Race D... ;)
No one "got pissed off and quit" in the WG on SGO7, quite the contrary.
But, it has not always worked that way.
True balance in numbers is pretty much impossible, especially with the player population what it is now.
And 90% of the ones here now have been around for a long time.
They know how things work and when it's no fun anymore.
And when the other side needs help.
Having WG is fine, but, it's a band-aid on a mortal wound.

The biggest difficulty with Geese deployment has always been the timing more than anything.

The best an admin can do, if he wishes to use them is to setting criteria for their deployment before the start of the server, having a non participant keep a record of these condtions for deployment and publishing thm on the forums when the criteria is met.

This relieves the admin of any accusations of bias, or premature action, and prevents those on the side with the advantage from maximizing their gains before "crossing the Rubicon" before triggering the deployment which they would naturally be inclined to do if the criteria were known to them.

That's BS because these players volunteered.

Yeah, so what? The purpose isnt to balance a server so no one wins it is to make sure players keep playing.

It's like I'm beating a dead horse!

Anyway, not to hijack, another fav of this server was not having a fast cruiser to fight every matchup. I credit the fleeting rules for fast cruisers for this but think they are still too retrictive. Mb instead of treating them as capital ships for fleeting we just say thdey cant wing together or with another 'fast ship.'

Insulting rubbish. If an admin did it for any other purpose than to keep up the population count somewhat even, then he doesnt deserve to be an admin.

Having noble goals does not mean that everyone will understand them as such, notice I used "accusations".  Transparency would alleviate most if not of this problem, and that would be better for the community.
