Errand of War
« on: April 23, 2007, 01:41:01 pm »
Stardate: 3198.4

....
Kirk: Damage report Mr. Spock?

Spock: Minor, Captain, we were most fortunate.  Blast Damage on decks 10 and 11, minor buckling in the anti-matter pods and the starboard nacelle, casualties are light.

Kirk: Maintain Surveillance Mr. Sulu.

Sulu: No Contact Captain, He blew up alright.

Kirk: Well we've been anticipating an attack, I say what we just experienced very nearly qualifies.

Spock: Yes, it would seem to be an unfriendly act.

Uhura: Automatic all points relay from Starfleet Command Captain, Code 1.

Kirk: Well there it is...War.  We didn't want it, but we got it.

Spock: Curious how often you human obtain that which you do not want.

Kirk: War or not, we still got a job to do.  Denying Organia to the Klingons.

Spock: With the outbreak of hostilities that might not be easy.  And the damage to the nacelle will impede our progress.

Kirk: Lay in a course for Organia, Mr. Sulu.  Warp factor seven.

Scotty: We canna maintain warp seven sair, best I can give you is warp five.

Kirk: Warp five it is then.

....

Sulu: Now approaching Organia, Captain.  Reading fifteen Klingon ships already in orbit.

Kirk: They beat us here.

Spock: Most unfortunate. But not unanticipated, the damage to our engines made our chances of arriving before the Klingons almost negligible.

Kirk: But we still had to take that chance.

Sulu: Sir, three Klingon D-7 cruisers are breaking orbit, they're coming right for us.

Kirk: Get us out of here Mr. Sulu, best possible speed.

...

If I can get some help setting up a server it should be ready after AOTK. :)

Basic Server Specs:

Federation (No Allies) vs. Klingons (No Allies)

Server length will be two weeks (two game years) 2263-2265 (This date can be moved, but I do want to keep it in the "Early Era")

Limited Order of Battle: Anything Light Cruiser and below will be available in the shipyards, Cruisers and Dreads will be available through the RMs.  When a Cruiser or Dread goes down it is lost until it is rebuilt.

VPs:  Federation and Klingon Regional Command Posts 2 VPs  Organia (Leaning towards no VPs, but would be fine if it is worth 1)

PvP:  At the moment, I don't know if I want to make PvP worth anything considering that taking down a Cruiser or a Dread eliminates that ship completely.  Perhaps I'll make the lighter ships worth points only if killed by other lighter ships.

Production:  Needs to be balanced so I welcome any comments (this is the first server I'm putting together so all help will be appreciated)
Klingon: 3 D6s 2 D7s 1 C5 per day  (For a total of 21 D6s, 14 D7s and 7 C5s per year)
Federation: 4 CAs, 1 DN per day (For a total of 28 CAs, and 7 DNs per year)
Cruiser and Dread production is not based on the map, the status of the map will only affect the smaller ships.
Cruiser restrictions:
Klingons:
Only 1 D6D or D7D may be built.  1 D6 Must be a D6B or D6K (or just a plain ol D6). 1 D7 must be a D7B, or D7K (or just a plain ol D7) Per day.
Federation:
Only 1 CAD may be built.  2 CAs must be the CAR (or just plain CA) variant Per Day.

Mission Pack: I would like to use EDs Warp packs, which would restrict the usefulness of the Drone boats anyways.

I'll get the map up as soon as I figure out how. :)

Since you are so unfamiliar with how to do a server or how they work, why dont you follow me thru the dev process for SG8. Along the way I'll make a Server Admin's Guide to the Galaxy and you can help me compose it.

And a good portion of doing a server is to get people to play it. You have to know what the players want in a server. A too narrow minded approach and you won't appeal to enough players to sustain interest. I suggest asking players what they want... After SG7 is over. Fresh ideas are always hatched when servers end.

I look forward to working with you if u take the offer. We need server admins like a guy needs water in the desert.

Sure, I'll help out.  One of the things I wanted to see if I could do here is set up a number of "Grudge Match" Servers pitting hated rivals against each other in a one on one battle over a limited region of space.  If they are successful, I would consider expanding it a bit to make it more of a campaign, where success and failure translates into advantages and disadvantages in future servers.

Sounds good, but the ship creation seems a bit high for our player numbers... 4 cas and 1 dn per day?...

I mean per RL day (which would translate to about 2 CAs a month roughly)  I want to set it up so that its some what "Realistic" and yet theres still room for enjoyment.  If ED gets the warp missions done I could trim that down because it would be easier to disengage.  I want the loss of a Cruiser or a Dread to hurt, but not be completely devastating.

wait... i'm confused.

4 cas in a 24 hour day...?

Like April 24th to April 25th, 2007?

That still seems like a bit much.

I think 2 CAs and one DN per day is feasible... no side should be losing mor ethan that.

Part of why its so high is that I'm constantly looking in at the Kill list from SGO7, and it seems like both sides are loosing half a dozen Capital ships a day, some are losing that many in the span of an hour.  If that kind of attrition occurred on a server set up like this, the war would rapidly come down to Destroyers and Frigates.

Which ships have different YFA?
I would be very interested in seeing that list of differences.
And what ships are missing?
Some ships will be different due to the SFB-style mods.

The ships that were missing from the SGO list:

F-POL
F-POL+
F-CFF
F-CFF+
F-GFF
F-SC
F-SC+
F-GDD
F-GCA

K-E3C
K-G2
K-G2C
K-G4
K-E3
K-E3D
K-E4
K-E4G
K-F5G
K-F5S
K-F5P
K-F5I
K-LF4
K-LD5
K-D6G
K-D6S
K-D6I
K-D7E
K-D7N
K-LD4

Ship with a different YFA: F-CLD

I only looked through it to 2265 since that is where this server would focus on.

Well, 90% of those are rarely, if ever flown, that's probably why, to better populate the shipyards.

Well, with only Destroyers and Frigates in the Shipyards, that wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Question though:  The K-D6 is considered Capital, should the F-CL be considered as well?  (I don't want to go the other way because the Klinks will rapidly have a whole lot of a K-D6Ds)

I think you should count the CL as a capital ship.  otherwise having both the CL and the DD which is a castrated CA, the federation will have too much of an advantage.

Ok Dizzy, how do I turn my Metaverse Map file into a nice and neat picture like you always seem to do for SGO?

I'm pretty sure the neat picture is from an actual server running the map with the black stripped out and replaced with a nice looking background
