I'd be real surprised if some of y'all didn't leave me in the dust
I was never here, you were never here, this conversation never took place, and you most certainly did not see me.

First time

second time.

And I went to Cnet's bandwidth tester and got this.
768.0 Kbps            DSL/Cable 768k
1078.8 Kbps - You           1078.8 kbps
1500.0 Kbps          Cable/DSL 1.5Mbps

So it seems to be fairly accurate.

As you can see the latency is extremely high. That is due to the Wireless Broadband that I am using. And how the signal has to go through a Wireless Extender unit so i can get signal outside the house.
Only in America .....do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

Hmm,

1592=d/l
254 = u/l
55=latency

How the heck do you get an upload rate that High Tus...you got one BIG pipe...talk about them completely restricting you...with an U/L like that you should have something like 50,000 D/L speed.

I suppose the same would apply to jualdeaux, you also seem to have a higher U/L than D/L?

Bandwidth only matters when you have the gigabytes of porn to prove it.

It's not our fault your stuck with dialup.

I remember modems...back in the before time, in the long long ago.

Imagine, in the next generation or so we're going to have kids who have always had high-speed connections. THey'll wonder what grownups did for porn back in the olden days.

We used ascii art dammit!! And we was gratefull for those text based bewbies!!

The local telephone hub is just over a block from me so I could easily get DSL- if I didn't object to the way the telephone company tried to destroy all the local internet providers once they chose to get into the ISP business.  Also last time I checked you had to use their software to handle the connection as they didn't use standard TCP/IP between you and their office.  That of course means Windows and maybe Apple which blocks my Linux machines and probably my Windows 2000 as I doubt they still support it.

The cable company is a better option and I have considered it but they also pull a lot of BS.  Not to mention the local cable system doesn't do much to stop your system from being hammered constantly by all the Windows bots on the local loop.  They wold increase performance if they did something to knock down the bots.

For your collection of "art".

Why would you deny yourself the greatness that is high speed?

I mean, sure it can be a bitch sometimes, but the slowest DSL (Which is like 19 bucks where I live) is still 10-20 times faster than dialup.

SBC supports linux computers.

I would say that the test failed somehow. yeah. i just tried it again and got ~1300 dl and ~5100 ul. it must not like my upload connection.

(Who is SBC?  Remember I'm in Canada.)

Its not the money.

The DSL thing is on principle.  When Bell Canada decided to create Sympatico as its wholey owned subsidiary  ISP they went around to all the independent ISPs and tried to massively raise their rates for renting lines from Bell - in violation of existing contracts.  The ISPs started a class action against them and won.

Now last I saw they (Sympatico) require you to use Windows (and IE) and install their software rather than just use industry standards.  Do you think that they still support Win2k (or Firefox and Thunderbird?) or that I'll let some bumbling telephone installer put software in my computer?  Some of the installers want to install a network card in the system.   They also are well known for leaving your system functional as far as internet access is concerned - any other software you may have installed that they mess up is your problem.  NO WAY is that going to fly with me.

Cable Internet is set up in a rather confusing fashion at present if you don't have at least basic cable (and my loathing of commercials means I gave up cable years ago).  Not to mention getting hammered by all the infected systems on your local loop.  Try to install Windows while connected to your cable internet without a good hardware firewall and you system will be compromised before the install is complete.  They are Linux friendly though as they use industry standards.

At some point I'll get annoyed with dialup and go cable unless something else better by my standards comes along.  Or Bell will annoy me fatally and I'll go cable and have them remove my 2nd phone line.

You could try an external modem?  That way it uses the protocols and transfers it to your computer via your interface.  I've had some good experiences with that method.
