Taldren: Why no capture?
« on: March 10, 2003, 05:25:52 pm »
I've just concluded that "disable capture" must be hard coded in the game. If I'm wrong please show me how to enable it for my Dynaverse server and single player games. If I'm right, I beg an explanation, what led to the disabling of this feature?

It turns the Borg into a bunch of bumbling idiots if they can't assimilate...  I want to assimilate, even if it's only the AIs.

Because it would make attacking the Borg far too easy I guess and especialy all other AI. When I played single player campaign I could capture and quite often this would make games too easy. Just imagine 3 ships beaming a full compliment of troops onto a ship at once, they would almost certainly have to retreat emediatly.

Capture in PvP is fun, especially when it's completely unexpected. For it not to be in D3 , especially with the Borg being there, strikes me as very odd indeed. Still got capture in D2 though

Capturing human player ships in D2 caused a CTD (crash to desktop). The bug probably hasn't been fixed in D3 so it was easier to disable the option. In D2, I got around this bug by ending the mission even if the human player had other ships to escape to (obviously transferring to another ship is not available in SFC3).

I'll have a play later this year to try and find a way around the problem. Look out for my 'Mission Fun Pack', it'll be free to download and will be available for both SFC2:EAW and SFC3.  All missions will be playable in both single-player campaigns and metaverse campaigns (online). Some surprises will be in store, these include random team starting positions, random asteroid fields (except in multiplayer), random 'visual candy' such as planets etc, AI interventions, mission balancing, cowardly AI captains and a few surprises !

Well clintk, I don't remember ever having a CTD from capturing another player's ship. I do, however, remember seeing an email on the Dyna Admin group saying that capture in D3 was removed because it is not fun for the one being captured. In that case, how come we can still blow people up? Surely that too is not fun for those on the receiving end?

On the EAW capture, it depends very much on the specific mission and the circumstances.   I've won a handful of PvP matches by capturing my opponent.

clintk,

There is not and never has been any "capture bug" in EAW.
The only problem I can think of is that it could have effected people with Low end systems and a crapy conection.

So clintK,If you are going to post crap,Make it correct crap!

Wasn't that capturing humans a exploit?  It only happened after one of the patches.

Face it if you really capture the vessel the original player would have no control over it.

Capturing the AI would be ok, but really, Borg would suck big time and I would have to constaly be clicking on "buy more f-ing troops" when I really want to click on "fill er up baby". Need that rolleyes function about now!

There was (now fixed I'm sure) the capture bug where you would CTD or lose control of your own ship or have to fight for control of the other ship after capturing the enemy players ship in D2 play (tested with high end PC's and good connections). Now while you may also call this crap since I am pretty sure that bug has been fixed and is no longer a problem, it did exist.

So, Rob Cole, I contend that you are full of it, if you say there were no capture bugs in EAW.

Your turn to post your own crap in rebuttal .......

I would love to see capture be an option in the multiplayer game. I dont use transporters at all, install type 1 on all ships classes because it just isnt worth it. If the only function is to temporarily disable a ship system before destroying the enemy what good is it. Lowering my shields is too great a risk in auto function. And to do that manually takes too much effort in combat.  Frankly if capture was an option I would reconsider. Especially playing Borg.
The only reason to put any marines on board now is strickly defense against ai's and daring(or stupid) humans.
The results of a capture should be the same as blowing up the enemy ship except, he loses his crew too. He starts over with a frigate AND a new crew  OR perhaps you get the prestige value of his ship and crew. That would turn some games quickly if  ship captures had those consequences. I think capture could be an option that is set by the server admin.

Hope to see it in the future....

Actually, that's not a bad idea there... Unfortunately I think the capture mode is hard coded and requires some heavy work to enable it...... But Maybe some Taldren folks can answer this one... BUMP!

Sorry Rob, there were capture issues in P vs P, causing them to be removed.  Losing control of a given ship is just one example.  The game would crash on capture on occasion in player vs player combat.

I dont personally miss it all that much.

I would like to see it better implemented if there was another expansion/sequel/similar space combat simulation.

The point is that you are not the repository of the list of EAW bugs, and declaring that just because you never saw it then somebody else is speaking crap is just a sorry indictment on your attitude. You are a cad and a bounder and a chap should be able to demand satisfaction but you would assuredly not be game enough to provide it.

While you are using the dictionary, look up "ass" (the english spelling - not the american) since it also applies to you, until you see fit to renounce your initial statement.
