Thanks guys. It was a darn good birthday for me. My partner took me on a trip to Southern California and my best friend came along as well. I got to spend part of Saturday and most of Sunday at Six Flags Magic Mountain where I discovered that they can still make a roller coaster to scare the bejesus out of me. I couldn't stop Robert from buying the picture of me all bug-eyed on that 'coaster, but he will NOT scan it and spread it around.
What was the ride...it's called "X"
http://www.sixflags.com/parks/magicmountain/Rides/x.html The advertisement says it will leave you speechless, and well, it did. What's so special about it? Well, the rider sits in what I describe as a recliner chair with a harness. (You put your arms through these molded plastic things and it goes across your chest kind of like a life preserver. Then the whole chair leans back and you go up the first big hill backwards. As you go through the drops, twists, loops, etc., the chair will flip forwards or backwards, leaving you not knowing what's going to happen next. After 30 years of roller coasters, it's nice to have one totally surprise you, and this one did (I started coasters with Space Mountain - Disneyworld, circa 1977).
On Saturday we went to dinner in West Hollywood with two friends of Robert's. Cindy's birthday was Sunday, like mine, and this makes two years in a row we've gotten together with her and her husband for our birthday dinner. The restaurant was Obar in West Hollywood and the food was spectacular. Even more surprising, the bill for five people was barely over five hundred dollars, and that included 4 large bottles of sparkling water, a very nice bottle of wine, as well as dessert and coffee for all five of us.
Oh yeah, and lest I forget, on the plane ride down to Burbank, we were on the plane with Mike Farrel, also known as "BJ" from MASH. I won't bother mentioning all the cute guys we saw in the parks (Hey, I can still LOOK). Overall it was a wonderful weekend leaving me feeling younger, not older.
