An Update on me...(TheJudge)
« on: March 01, 2007, 05:54:31 pm »
Yeah, it's been a while.  Sorry, life's been real busy lately.  Stephen called me the other day and I realized that I hadn't updated y'all on some things going on with me...and that I should.

The bad:

Well, some of you may remember I moved from Arizona to California to help take care of grandparents and my Aunt Carol who was greatly impaired by a stroke.  Aunt Carol passed away about two weeks ago.  It was a good thing overall.  She died at home, surrounded by people she loved and who loved her.

About a month ago, I was going through a bout of insomnia and around three in the morning I noticed my feet tingling and numb, like sometimes happens when a foot, leg, or other body part 'falls asleep'.  Only thing was...it was both of my feet. I went to sleep around four, and woke up at 8:15 in the morning.  When I woke up, the numbness had spread up my legs and was now just below my knee caps.  My first though was stroke, but it was both feet, not just one side and there were no other symptoms.  I wanted to shrug it off and just stay home from work, figuring it would go away.  My partner, Robert, insisted that I at least call the nursing hotline for my health plan, Kaiser Permanente.

He won, I called.

Long story short, she told me I could make an appointment to see my doctor, or I could go to the emergency room.  She recommended going to the ER, so I would save myself a trip when the doctor sent me there.  Robert drove me, and by this time I was barely able to walk (try walking when you can't feel anything below your knee caps.  It's not fun).  Of course, the ER was packed.  It was the busiest day this Kaiser ER had seen in years.  That's why it took an hour to see the nurse.  Fifteen minutes later I was in a private ER room hooked up to monitors of all sorts with an IV line in me and twelve vials of blood out of me.  Some teenager who had broken his arm was on a gurney in the hallway because they didn't have enough rooms, but me, I was stuck in a room.

At that point, it kind of became obvious that I was in serious trouble.

Boiling it down, I was diagnosed (after a spinal tap) with Guillian-Barre Syndrome.  You can look it up on the net.  There's a lot of documentation (about 1 in 100,000 come down with it).  Essentially it's when your body's immune system malfuntions after a virus (and high stress levels don't help - which guess what I experience every day?).  The immune system starts attacking the nerves, eating the sheath around them.  The doctor gave me two treatment options.  One was to have IGV treatments.  IGV is made by taking blood cells from thousands of donors, pulling out part of the blood, and mixing it in this solution.  Each day, for five days, I would receive of these IGV solutions (remember each one can have the blood of thousands of people in it).  Obvious risks are HIV, Hepatitis, or other blood-borne pathogen.  Option 2 was plasma phleuresis.  That's where they stick a big needle in you, suck out your blood, run it through a centrifuge and seperate the white/red blood cells from plasma.  Then they stick the blood cells back in you and throw out the plasma.  That has a high risk of heart failure.

Since I can live with AIDS or Hepatitis or other pathogen for decades, but heart failure can be much more permanent, I chose option #1.

For five days I was in Intensive Care at the hospital.  The numbness retreated quickly under treatment, and now I'm doing much, much better (and I destroyed any camera taking a picture of me having to use a walker to move around like an old man! I don't turn 36 until Sunday!).  There is still occasional tingling in my feet, and my toes are still slightly numb, but it's far better than it was and it's not getting worse.  While in the hospital, my diabetes went WAY out of control but is now battened down and behaving.  I'm on so many meds that I use a damn pill-box to make sure I'm taking them right...but it's better than being dead (and yes, I have blood tests scheduled every three months for the next year to check and see if there's been transfer of a blood-borne pathogen).

The Good News:

Robert and I are still together, and doing well.  After my sister and her kids visited with us last summer, we started talking about adopting one or two kids.  We're getting our finances straightened up, looking at buying a house and really 'settling down' before we really act on that...but it's something we've both decided we want.  He's still working for the California Democratic Party.  I'm still working for a Democratic-leaning consulting firm (one of our projects is www.savesanonofre.com).  Also, I'm a delegate to the 2007 CDP convention in San Diego next month.  That's going to be fun, especially since many of the presidential hopefuls just might be there (I'm wanting a picture with the Madame Speaker.)

Oh, and yeah, you see, there's this Sci-Fi script I've written that...well I can't say much but things are looking really good.  Some people who were behind Farscape are taking a look, and we've gotten further than 'foot in the door' in a couple of places.  It's television...and oh boy it would be nice to have my friends here telling me how awful a plot line was...or how the technology wouldn't work that way after watching an episode.  I've had hopes on this one before...but I've never had to sign legal paperwork with studios and production companies before...and now I've had to do just that.

Um, and just in case...if you're ever watching an episode and remembering Hot & Spicy...all characters are fictional and not based on any person living or dead.

I'm glad to see you posting again Kirk. It was a thrill to hear from you on the phone the other day, even if it was bad news. Man I can hardly wait to see your story.

Man you just got to start being like a duck with water on it's back, and try your hardest to remove stress from your life. I know it's hard, but with Robert, It sounds like he can shoulder some of the stress for awhile.

Anyway, I'm always there if you need me bro.

Hell, even if the characters are bad guys, I wouldn't mind one based on me.
Any publicity is good publicity... I mean, look at Paris and Brittany. ;)

I know we've had our disagreements- and that some of the victimized walls in the H&S room still haven't been patched- but such an ill wind should never blow in anyone's direction, Judge.

Glad that you are improving, and I hope that things continue to do so. Best of luck to you and yours.

Well, another little update.  There's a package sitting on my porch at home that I have to get tonight, open it up, sign some more legal documents, mail it off to Burbank, and then we're being considered by a second production company (I still haven't told the first one that my motorcycle's license plate says "Frell U".  That might scare them off since they'll know what it means).  Since I'm flying down to Burbank tomorrow, I'll just be putting it in the mail there (going to Magic Mountain for my birthday on Sunday).

While there aren't any actual characters bearing more than a passing resemblance to anyone I know, there are a lot of arguments that might bear a resemblance to things we've all argued about in the past....the major difference is that in the script I might actually concede a point or two to the conservatives.  :)

I can share just a little bit about it now...

Much of the story takes place on, or in orbit of Earth, circa 2016.  It's a year that sees the last flight of the shuttle Endeavor, yet another space tourist/wannabe reporter spending $20 million to go into space, and a fleet of space ships appearing in orbit...

I've been wondering about you J, especially since you have a B-day coming up. Dang, you are younger than I?

Anyways, don't play around with the stress thing. I was under a LOT of stress in 94 and my PPK enzymes were way above normal. When that goes kaput it can affect your heart and skeletal functions and cause muscular damage to both.

Stress can and does kill people. It affects not only your body but your mind too.

I had an abnormal CXR in nov, then a CAT scan in Feb (I love how noone will answer my questions about it on the phone, even my primary care doc did not call, I guess it is something that needs to be addressed in person next week on my appt?).

I too have had numbness in hands and feet, and worse, hydrosis (I'm teaching ya'll a med term) at night, much like I had after return from the sandbox playing ground in Iraq (It was all over the brigade, not just me).

Don't play around with your health, from what I've seen, we are some of the most sanest people still left in America, and I sure as heck do not want to have to be at the burial of one of our fold.  ;)

When it rains, it pours.  My grandmother, Nina Dell Kirk died tonight around 6:45 p.m. Pacific Time.  All three of her children are already deceased (Daniel R Kirk Sr - my father, in 2000, Beverly Ann Sanders in 2002, and Carol Jean Welch in 2007).  Her husband, Buell Ray Kirk, passed away from a brain tumor in 1975.  My sister and several cousins are all that is left now on that side of the family.  May God welcome her home at long last.

Wow J, that's unusual that all of her children died before her. I know you are feeling really down right now. I think I hurt the most when my stepdad died (My biological dad died a month before I was born, K.I.A. during Vietnam, you being a Navy guy I'm sure you are familiar with the P-5 Marlin). Why when my stepdad died did I feel the most pain? Because I realized that I was not immortal and that my brothers and sisters and I were next in line.

It's a really huge wake-up call in life.

Some seriously bad stuff in those reports but some seriously good ones, too.  Glad to see you're on the mend, Judge, and definitely glad that you're progressing toward a goal I myself share.  Can't offer enough condolences for the family, but consider this me trying.  And lemme know if you need anything.

Condolences on the passing of your loved ones, but if the passing was peaceful and not unduly early then may that be not so much bad news as just news of life, the winning and the losing the being born and the passing away.  Saddened to hear your medical troubles but also glad to hear swift action has overcome them somewhat.  Thrilled about possible success on the sci fi show !!  That is definitely some of the good news of life,  some of that "winning" !  Congrats on those things and strength for the rest, very nice to get a Judge update  8)

Thanks again folks...as for the sci-fi show.  Considering some of the frelling people we're talking with right now, my partner has told me that if Ben Browder gets near the casting couch there better be a video tape or I'm  dead.

My real last name is Kirk...first name Dan.  Dad wanted to name me James T.  Mom said "No way in hell is my son being named after a character on a television show!"  I ended up with a "Junior" at the end of my name...

Growing up, I was very glad my mom put her foot down...the teasing was bad enough as it was.

Yo J, I thought I would holler at you on this since B.G. 2 is one of your favorite shows.

Since when did the Pegasus stand K.I.A.? Isn't it enough Starbuck was a female in the new series? The Pegasus was M.I.A. after taking on the 2 Cylon base stars in the original, and IMHO Caine would have been still alive, somewhere...

My thanks to everyone! (and especially MJ).  :)  He's right, and this is one point that is especially important to me right now.  Over the years, this Dynaverse community has become like a family in many, many ways.  We may not always keep in touch, some of us may not like each other much at all, but when the chips are down we are there for each other.

This last weekend we buried my grandma.  Many of you are quite aware of the love/hate relationship I had with her.  Are arguments shook the house at times, but we never stopped loving each other.  This weekend was surreal in many respects.  My four cousins and I stood together, in Grandma's driveway and realized that by and large, the generations before us were all gone.  (Two of my cousins still have one parent left, but it was the parent that divorced their other parent and who never stayed close).  Our grandfather died in 1975, and all of Grandma's children died in the last seven years (my dad in 2007, Aunt Bev in 2002, and Aunt Carol a month ago).  It was hard on Grandma to lose all her children first, and mercifully it sped up the end for her.

My family has a tradition at funerals that I actually don't like, most of the time.  They like for friends and family members to get up and speak for deceased.  I've resisted doing it when Mom passed, when Dad passed, and when both of my aunts passed away.  Both of my grandmother's surviving sisters, my sister, and all my cousins asked me to do it this time, and I did.  I did it mostly because I knew it was what my grandmother would have wanted.  Now, I've spoken in public in the past.  I've given a speech in front of several hundred thousand people, I've spoken on NPR, on local television news, and given testimony before committees of California's State Assembly and State Senate.  Also, I've written speeches for political candidates for a wide variety of offices, written e-mails that have gone out to thousands and thousands of people as part of a political/issues campaign.

Speaking for my Grandmother at her funeral was the hardest of them all, and according to everyone who came up and spoke to me afterwards, I think it was also the best speech I've ever given.

This weekend was as close to perfect a farewell for our grandmother as it could have been.  From picking up my sister and my cousin Brian at the airport (on two separate days), to the service itself, to the reception dinner we held at Grandma's house for over fifty people afterwards, all the way to the end of the night where I sat around the table on the back patio playing poker with my sister, my cousins, my partner, my best friend, and another family friend.  It was just an absolutely perfect weekend, full of the fellowship and sharing that was the hallmark of my family.

As I said in my speech...They're all gone now.  The family that we grew up with, the family that raised us, not as cousins, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, living lives each on their own, but rather as a family that grew together, loved together, and shared together.  The generations that came before us have left this life to their great reward in Heaven, but we, their children and grandchildren, stand together today.  We remember what they taught us, to love one another, to forgive, to accept, and always to remember that we are a family.  They may be gone, but the traditions, the values, and the love that they taught us live on today in us, and in our children.  We will never forget all that they gave to us, and we will pass on these traditions and beliefs to our children, because they are good things, right things, in a world that has all too often forgotten what it means to love and be loved.

Whoa!  I didn't hear about this; I haven't been online much lately...

... I sincerely hope that medical research can quickly come up with some way to stop it.

I hope also you regain your full health and soon.

Take care of yourself, and get better.
I guess I need to get online more often and keep myself updated.
You certainly have my best wishes.

Wow.  Judge I wish there was more I could do for you and yours.  Please know that we keep you in our hearts and thoughts!

As for speaking at your grandmother's funeral.  I too have done it and it was the hardest thing I have ever done.  I spoke for my whole family and I was wracked with nerves, hoping to the gods I would get it right and not break down.  I guess I got it right but I couldn't hold it together and had to stop.  I finished but it was incredibly hard not to fall to my knees afterwards.  I don't speak in public and I hope never to do that again.  I am not that brave.

Take care of yourself and we hope to see your show on the air!  Do keep us posted on that!

Judge...

My deepest apologies for being late with this... I haven't checked back here in a while.

You have my greatest sympathies over the loss of your Grandmother.
My thoughts and prayers (albeit late) go out to you and all your family.

The best of luck with the TV show... if you get it on-air, you're definitely going to have to let us know it's time slot!

Good news/bad news...

1.  Went to Disneyland again this weekend.  Good time overall.  Space Mountain broke down, but we were 3/4 of the way through the ride.  Sat in the car on the tracks for about 15 minutes, with all the work lights turned on.  That gave us a damn good view of the insides of Space Mountain, and yes, we took pictures!!!  I'll post a link to them when we get them posted.  Then we got to go through the ride for a second time after they fixed the hydraulic issue...

2.  I've heard back from Henson Productions.  The bad:  "We're going to have to take a pass on the script."  Why?  "It's too original."  "It starts out like stuff on TV now but then it goes off in a totally new direction, and I don't know if I can sell that to the Execs who are a bit skittish about new stuff."  Last comment from them:  "The last thirty pages weren't in the version I looked at.  Can you send them to me?  I'd like to see how it finished..."

So, bummed out that I was too original, but the overall comments basically said they liked the story and that if something was a closer 'mimic' of what's on T.V. now, they would take a look at it.

Ah, but you half-expected that they were kind of formulaic, didn't you?

You could always try and sell them on the whole "People are hungry for something new and fresh!"  I mean I sure am!  Why don't you try Sci-Fi Channel?  You could try and strong arm them by saying hey I won't give you the ending to read untill you at least try to sell it to the Execs.  I don't know, just trying to help!

You know the show I wish they did do more of was Firefly.  I liked it sorta campy but it had its moments.

Sorry to hear about your aunt and grandmother, Judge. I know that you cared a great deal for them. Just remember the good things...like chocolate gravy. We dont get along, but I feel for anyone who loses a family member. You'll be in my prayers.

Also, Ive never thought the people in Hollywood had any brains. If humans had thought like that throughout history, we'd still be living in caves and eating raw meat. Theyre a bunch of morons. Keep shopping it around. The people who claim that they have never failed at anything are the ones who have never tried to do anything. Good luck.

Thanks folks.  I will keep shopping it around...but I did know going in that it was a long shot...especially because I really like putting unexpected twists in my stories  and I don't like stereotypical formulaic writing...

That being said, I've come up with another idea that is a LOT more formulaic, but still fresh.  It's set in the same universe as my frist script but has a Battlestar-type theme to it along with some fairly diverse characters.  We'll see if I can get the plot developed and get the thing written fairly quickly so I can turn it around and get it submitted.  The original script is still out to 2-3 other studios, and is  being looked at by some foreign investors for off-shore production...

Hollywood and the Music industry keep saying that piracy is reducing profits yet here is the real reason why profits are down.  They just want to do the same old thing nothing new, nothing risky.  Why should people go out and pay for a show that is just the same old thing they've seen their whole life?  Why would a band that is just another clone band get people to go out and buy more of the same old stuff?

Until one of the studios learns to take a risk on something new they will all be stagnant and wondering why.

Maybe you can convince just one of the studios that the time is right for a risk and yours is the show that they can win with and rewrite the rules.  Good Luck.

I might put the script up where it can be downloaded, just to get feedback...
