Lab-grown replacement teeth fill the gap

Darkblade notes: Though the method here uses embrionic cells; experience shows that the few results gotten by embrionic cell research have always eventually been replicated by adult stemcell research. and by far the most useful and most numerous results come from adult stem cell research.

Here’s something to smile about: a Japanese team has successfully grown replacement teeth and implanted them into the mouths of adult mice, suggesting that a similar technique could replace missing teeth in humans.

Takashi Tsuji at the Tokyo University of Science, Japan, and his colleagues took single-tooth mesenchymal and epithelial cells – the two cell types that develop into a tooth – from mouse embryos. They stimulated these cells to multiply before injecting them into a drop of collagen gel. Within days, the cells formed tooth buds – the early stage of normal tooth formation.

The team then transplanted these tooth buds into cavities left after they had extracted teeth from adult mice. There, they developed into teeth with a normal structure and composition. The engineered teeth also developed a healthy blood supply, and nerve connections.

Previous approaches to regenerating teeth have involved growing them in the kidneys of mice before transplanting them into the mouths of other mice (see Tooth growing experiments bring smiles).

In situ
“This study represents an important contribution to the field of tooth regeneration” because it demonstrates how teeth can be grown directly in the mouth, says Jeremy Mao, at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York, US.

But Paul Sharpe at Kings College London, UK, notes that earlier studies have shown alternative methods of regenerating teeth directly in animals’ mouths.

He says Tsuji’s approach is different from earlier methods because it involves culturing the cells in a collagen gel. But according to Sharpe, the advantage of using such a gel mixture remains unclear.

Since mesenchymal and epithelial cells have the potential to develop into other organs and hair follicles, Tsuji hopes his method could eventually be applied more widely. “We hope to collaborate with dentists and clinicians in various fields to develop artificial organs for people,” he says.

this great. don't know how long it will be before we see some actual use in routine dentistry, though.

Very true Storm. Have to mention I loved your personal note, I wonder how many people well listen though.

Hey how you feeling, I take it abit better, since I see you posting some more lately. I'm gearing up for the summers projects. Mainly building another Deck <snikers> IT will be between our place and the old Dog trailer, with a privacy fence on the rear end, and a half wall with some kind of shade roofing on the front end. I figure we could put the bosties out during the day, and Charlotte in the front.

Hey she's actually getting along with the bostons now. we brought her in a few times when the temp dipped down. Well she started to tear the carpet up, in your room, so I let her out with Darth Bitchie on the loose (Didn't know she was out at the time), anyway, she just looks at them with bemusement now.

Also, check out Trappers thread in General topics over at Hannity, we have a huge ass Red wolf out here, that I need to catch , before some other Rancher kills him.

cool. a red wolf. wow.

Yeah, I had to take the wife to the doctors yesterday for a check up Her Acid Reflux was getting pretty bad, and when we left, I heard something strange on the car. So I pulled over just in front of the mail boxes, got out checked the tires, then kinda layed down on my knees and hands and looked under the car.

There was a stick we had picked up, probably from when I had to re do the drive due to the weather, and I couldn't reach it. So I figured it would fall off, so I got back in the car. Denise said Steve, Look over there.

Not 20 yards from the car, was the biggest damn Wolf I have ever seen. Let me put it this way, Having been outside with the thing, and never hearing it, seeing it, or smelling it, First I said It, then I did IT.

I got a call out to the Oklahoma Wildlife place here, and waiting for them to call me back. Like I said, I would hope that IT can be captured and cared for, rather then some one shooting it protecting there Cattle etc.

That's what I thought also, or if there where, they would be far to the East of us. I called the wildlife Dept. again, and there head guy for Lincoln county Gary Emmons is out untill wendsday. I tell ya that was one big Guy out there, and I wonder IF he might have a mate. I know redwolves are very territorial, and take one mate, and basicly there Pack consists of the adult pair, and yearling cubs.

IT had me second guessing myself though, as I had heard that wolves had been out of the state since the 30's, But there it was, as big and proud as could be.

True, I didn't know about the alligators , but IT wouldn't surprise me that they are around your area in SE Oklahoma. I remember Denny and the kids teasing me years ago, because I said there where Alligators in Texas. That year, we took the kids down to Louisianna to visit there dad, and sure enough, there where alligators right next to the highway there in Eastern Texas.

I know the third of March, I'm taking her, and my family (Mom Grandmaw, sister) out to eat. we didn't get to celebrate X-mas this year together, due to differant things, but you are more then welcome to come up and join us bro.

Well who knows man, I mean if she feels that is her calling, maybe she has tapped into something we don't understand.

Hey I've been meaning to ask you, what's the deal with these Carbon Credits I see pop up on the news here and there?

a boondoggle designed to cripple american economic power while allowing the worst offenders China and India to be exempt on carbon emmisions. carbon creditare a currency which controls the exhasts of industry they are traded like money. if you want to produce more carbon out put than you are allocated by treaty then you have to use real money to buy credits from a country not running at capacity an take thier surplus credits. in essesne we would be paying humongous tarrifs on our own production to slackers.
