Windows?
« on: February 08, 2007, 12:21:06 am »
I was wondering if there were any good places to pick up interior graphics for window textures.  Other than Sci-Fi art, that is.

Me?  I like to use natural materials.. so I grab shots from Google Images, take photos of stuff, etc..

I think Lord Schtupp did a couple of his ships windows using layouts from a mens magazine.  ;)

Just keep in mind, they're pretty small windows usually.. and the bigger ones, just use a bigger shot.  :D

I have used a picture of a window in a window, and it worked ok. If you don't want to use SciFi stuff go look up gundam and other anime, they also have some good interiors that can be used.

Here's a good example of something that I would use:

http://toxic.magnesium.net/~heather/pics/zelda_window_022402_big.jpg

I'd crop off kitties tail end, and then place this inside a border to frame the cat.  At that point, I'd paste this inside a smaller window in the secondary hull somewhere, and someone onboard has a kitty that likes to watch stars go by.  :)

(edit: decided to show this a bit more indepth, and explain it more.. visually.  :D

There's two elements I want to show in the domestic homey window texture I'm creating.. a cat, and a bedroom that is Trek.

So I went onto Google Images and searched  "cat" "window" and then "Trek" "bedroom".  Found the above image, and this one: (saw the full details on this on Home&GardenTV, this is a guy's apartment in England)

http://www.coolhunting.com/images/24thcid_bedroom.jpg

I then started on the two, selecting around the cat first to crop down to just what I needed (window_tutorial00001.jpg), and cropped it to the frame and cat.  I selected most of the garden, and inverted it to select everything else.  Brought down the brightness about 25 or so, and then re-inverted it to select the garden (the part I want to replace).  It's now ready for the background I want.

Now, on the bedroom shot, I very roughly select an area that I want to show, including up to the edge of where the cat *would* be.  I copy that, and go to my pre-selected cat photo, and paste into it's selected area.  Resulting in the final shot (cat_in_trek_window.jpg).

It's now ready to put into a window frame on a texture.  :)

I make my own in PSP using the draw shapes feature, layering them with light to dark colours and blending them - I'll post some pics later.

Man DonKarnage, Clean up your desktop bro. LOL I haven't seen that much clutter since F9thCentaurus went on a bender, and wound up chopping down trees with a herring.

Okay, now I'd suggest tinting the windows a shade of light blue.. maybe 25% or so.  That way they won't be "perfectly" transparent.. but still give a good hnt of what's inside..

awsome job

Perfect.  :D

Not so hard, is it?  ;)

The only thing is.. at this point, unless the ship is a Nova or that size.. I'd decrease the size of your windows to about 10-15% of their current size and add more rows of them.. if it's a Sovy, you have built for a massively tall crew that is about 50 feet tall.  :D  (tried to post this yesterday, but was having problems reaching the site from work).

But the windows are looking really good...

Not so hard,

Make a new texture with a light blue color. Then you make new layer with a circle cut it in two and add a line between both halves. select the background Go to light effects and add a sunburst with white for the color to the upper corner. Select the vector layer and the area selection tool and select the area inside the drawn piece. Merge the layers down and copy that area you selected and paste it into the area you want the window.

Now you can add complacitions to it, but making this a transparent area above another background to get a more realistic look.
