OT: Tech-Dorque Question.
« on: February 05, 2007, 11:01:51 pm »
I am having trouble running a dvd burner on my system.  My partner got it to work once ( I'm burning Doctor Who DVDs for Thomas' birthday).   I disconnected it and uninstalled the software.  Now, when we we reconnect it and intstall the software, it doesn't give you the option of making an actual DVD.  When I disconnected it, I just pulled the wires, and not used the  install/uninstall hardware thing.

Can anyone help?  I want to have these done by the 10th, if I can figure out how to make it work.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Sarah, it should not be all that hard to install. I know that you do have a Dell system. But what I need is the brand name of the DVD burner. Then we will go from there. :)

Lyrekillers right. Also what burning software are you using. If you can get yourself NERO, it's pretty stable.

I'm using a ComStar External DVD/CD Writer (USB 2.0)
Featuring Pioneer  DVD/CD Writer--16x16 Maximum DVD writing speed.

The software is Nero Start Smart.  The only problem is that the option for burning DVD's is greyed out.  It's almost as if the system is not recognizing the burner at all.

Hmm. Does it have the little drop down window that will let you select your DVD rom? I have two on my system, and I have to manually select in another window which one I want to use. If not I get that greyed out window.

Huh?  It doesn't matter anymore as the machine is now asking for video file extensions that don't exist, like .vob, and stupid things like that.  I've given up.  My son will not get his Doctor Who vidoes for his birthday.

silly question, but did you unplug it when you uninstalled it ?? Sometimes the USB port gets confused and unpluging/repluging it sometimes resets the controller.

Sarah,
Download DVD Shrink, version 3.2. It's free and works great !!      http://www.dvdshrink.org/

As far as your DVD burner, go into your system folder and un-install your burner in there. Reboot and see if that works. If not, un-install the IDE channel that the burner is running on and re-boot. No need to pull wires off your burner.

You should not have to un-install Nero. Also, check for updates to see if that helps.

ComStar?!

You forgot one important bit you HAVE to do to get anything made by ComStar to run...

You need to say a prayer to the blessed Jerome Blake.  Thanking him for this wonderful piece of technology that he provided and ask him for his forgiveness in what you are about to do.  A prayer for enlightenment would be frowned upon...

So you're saying I should have my partner pick up a different brand, then?

IDE channel ?? It's a USB device.

I have 3 USB flash drives and when I pull 1 out and plug in a different one winXP tries to use the driver for the first one. I have to remove the first key, reboot, then plug in the second one to get it to read correctly. Unplugging a USB cable is MUCH easier than trying to reload software, try it.

Sorry, it was a joke.  I hope you didn't take it seriously.

There's a quasi-religious cult in the BattleTech Universe that goes by the name ComStar.  They were founded by a man named Jerome Blake, who they worship as a God.  In order for them to use anything technological they have pray to Blake (or his deciple Conrad Toyama).  Only then are they allowed to activate the technological device.  Early people involved in the "Order" did those things not because they believed, but because if they didn't their spy agency (ROM) would take them into a dark room to "Reeducate" them.  Later on, the people truely believed that it wouldn't work without the prayer.

Oh, oops, yeah, I took it seriously.  No biggie.  I wasn't impressed with Comstar and Nero anyway.  I need something external and big button easy.

Sorry , I must have glossed over the part of it being USB. ( late, tired, yada, yada, yada....)

When you remove a USB device, stop it first using the hardware icon on the right side of your task bar. Your other problem may be tied to whatever controller chip that Comstar uses in the external enclosure. Pioneer drives are generally very good writers. Please note that not all CD/DVD burners can circumvent the anti-piracy schemes built into the source disk. Typically the newer drives can read and write the older schemes with no problems, but your mileage may vary.....

I'm not trying to copy discs.  I'm just trying to take stuff I have downloaded and put it on disc.

Most of these programs require additional purchase to put avi or mpegs on a dvd.  Even Nero.   When I try to open a file it tells me that it can't find whateverfile.File_TS.  What the helll is that?

That .TS file is a file is a trash file.  Literally, that's what a disk will show that's been on a Mac, along with Trashes.TS.

There's no Mac anywhere near here.
