How many of you look back into your past (frequently)?
« on: January 08, 2007, 08:46:48 pm »
I'm wondering... How many of you look back to memories in your own past frequently?  It can be general, or specific, whether it's hobbies to kill time, or computer-wise (simpler graphics and web pages when broadband was a pipe dream for most people [56k not as much so] or even before the Internet was ever popular), or actual real-life memories of school or family or having a good time outside... Anything?

I think I can rephrase it to be a simpler question; How many of you are nostalgic?  I don't mean just occasionally every few weeks or days when something reminds you of a memory...

I was wondering this as I looked back as being a kid in the '90s, from running around Camp Butler, Okinawa to Fort Huachuca, AZ, to where I live at now... At a time where things seemed more innocent, where I only had hair on my head, when I worried less about things around me in life (and when graphics were much simpler on the internet; when everyone had either 14.4, 28.8, or 56k).  I look back then and it seemed longer ago then how long it actually was for me... I feel like a decade older (with a mustache that I'm growing, especially) than I am and it seems I'm wishing things started to slow down; I mean early '06 seems like yesterday...

*sigh*

I'm a married man Chris, the wife makes sure I look at my past all the time. Hell she even brings up some of the dumber things I did in the past. She is relelntless bro.

I still can't believe it's been three years since I graduated high school and joined the Air Force, and now I'm a junior in college. If early 06 feels like yesterday, then mid 04 seems like just last week...

It's been proven if you look into the past a lot inside of yourself, your drems reflect the present conflicts, and more often than not those people are "lucid" dreamers. You can change what happens because you know it's a dream. They also happen to dream in color, which I always have, I do not see how people dream in black and white.

Nostalgia? I always wish I could change this and that, but until I learn Einstein's theory and prove it and go there, the past is what it is, the past...

Heh, and Stephan hasn't been married near as long as I have (June '75)..

I look back occasionally, thinking of old friends, my dad, the lack of responsibility as a 15 year old...but hey, you have to face the fact that you get older, and as you do, you may have kids that you have to be an example to..

Also, you may have to be an example to people you work with..your ethics, morallity, day to day lifestyle..they can all make an impact..

Wait until your in your 50's, and your granddaughter jumps on your back while you were quietly watching a football game...and you give her a hug and a kiss and let her know how much you love her, even tho' you're going to have to take 16000 miligrams if ibuprofen just to get to bed...

Well -

I'm in my forties - and I guess I can say I'm nostalgic....  various events/hallmarks can increase your looking back.....

My earliest memory is of a party in my childhood home, mostly peoples legs and drinks on the coffee table and the black and white images of a mans foot stepping on the moon

I was playing w/GI-Joes while the Vietnam War was still going on

My parents both served during WWII and grew up in the Great Depression

My Grandparents were born in the 19th Century

I remember "tuning" in the TV and - if u were lucky - about 7 or 8 channels to choose from....

The rotary phone - truly "dialing" a number.... what a sensation....

vinyl - needles and cover art... liner notes...

Snow in November lol.....

didn't mean this to turn into a rant.... sorry guys ;)

Heh my past hit me like a brick this last week.  Ex-Fiance' + picture I took + now on the internet = Not fun...

Worst part about it is that I really have no idea how the hell it got there.  Other than I know it was on her Hard drive years ago...

Sigh...

I'm constantly looking at the past.  Doing so helps me work as a better parent for my kids and a better Supe for my Jr. Sailors.

I remember most of those things as well. My g-grandfather was born in 1872.

I remember playing Atari.

I had one of the big GI Joes and a Bionic Man action figure that had the little telescope in his head so you could use his "bionic eye".

We only had 4 TV channels. CBS, ABC, NBC, and a locally owned station that is now a Fox station. We had a black and white TV most of the time I was growing up.

My older brother and I ran around the farm playing "war",  using sticks as rifles, and chucking rock "grenades". (Those things hurt like h*ll when they hit you in the head). I remember my older brother yelling, "I shot you! Youre dead." My replying, "No you didnt. I was on the other side of the barn". To which he yelled back, "I was using a top secret bullet that goes around corners". That reminds me, I need to go kick his a** for that.  ;D

Chris,

I actually prefer to visualize what I will be looking back on ten years from now.

i.e. - hmm - why didn't I invest in this / take that mod to completion / spend more time with my daughter / etc..

I try to extrapolate the best I can to motivate myself now - not to say I'm not nostalgic - nor that I'm not guilty of googling old girlfriends once in a while.

Stephen,

We must be married to the same woman  ;)

Raven,

Think thats bad ??

I look back so many times during the day I would need half of the day just to add them up. Every decision I make is usually preceded by a flashback to the time I made the same decision earlier in my life, which tempers the current decision. Weird, but I'm really curious to know if others do this, and if so do they realize that they're do it. Maybe I'm just crazy and can't admit it.

When I get nostalgic I go back to my early adulthood to make another attempt at discover the reason I survived to my current age, or back to the time I thought were the worst points in my life and KNOW it couldn't have turned out any other way.

And this time next year I get married for the first time and hope the memories I will make in the future will let me forget the past and move on.

Well for starters congrats to you on your up comming wedding MalaK!  Good luck in your new life and just remember it is a whole new life so in a way it is a clean fresh start!

I do look into my past sometimes to remind myself why I am the way I am and why I love Steve and the kids so much even when they are all being $#!+s from the deepest darkest reaches of hel . . .  ;D

What worries me about looking back so often we sometimes forget to look forward too and also to enjoy what we have NOW in our lives.  Yeah sure somedays it just doesn't seem worth it to roll out of bed and face what you gotta face but you do it and then it's over and becomes the past, it's a good thing.

WORD!!!!  ;D

When I get real nostalgic I think back to things that just stick in my mind. All the Camping trips that I went on with my Dad and brother as a little kid. Wooing my future wife with bold tales and some lies ;D. Holding my Newborn Son for the first time.(Gawd was that over 31 years ago) :o Having my Daughter drive me absolutely nuts after she turned 13.

Those are a few things I look back on.

I do look back. Sometimes. Aint that old yet, but old enough to hate a whole lot of the crap that i've done and experienced this far, bunch of things no one should have to go through. Some of the crap comes back up in nightmares every now and then and walks behind me like huge goddamn shadow that entirely manages to hide me.

Sometimes I just sigh and wonder how the hell did things go so far and fast, how the hell did I get the kind of reputation.
'course theres things that i kind of smile about and some funny stuff too but generally, when I look back I think who the hell that guy is.

look up the song 'blood for blood - white trash anthem' if you want an idea of what im talking about... and no, things werent exactly like that, but far gone enough.
