How about a story concentrating on the longevity and support that SFC, in particular, but some of the older games in general still receive? How many new models were uploaded to battleclinic just in January? I'll bet that the number would be pretty amazing.
Dynaverse.net's continuing support for the game. Not just by supplying the forums, but housing the D2 server (I believe that there's an ongoing plan for an upgrade to the server. Might be good to let that out to others.)
The work that's being done by fans for this game. Already mentioned all of the new models (MR's recent planet pack is a good individual mention. Also Don Karnage's "Eras of War" models he recently rediscovered and uploaded). There's also work worth mentioning on the D2 side. Dave "Nuclear" Wessels new DV script work, Adding new game missions thru the scripting API. (In mission warp, for example. I believe that it was started by el Karnak.) Tracy G also is doing work on new multiplayer scripting. There might be other things going on on that front as well. I know they're planning a new Multiplayer campaign (Check with Dizzy and Die Hard). All of the recent campaigns have included pretty intensive game mods. Not just your "vanilla" OP game.
Maybe you could figure out how to get the point in there that we'd like the Devs and producers of current games to give us this type of support for their products. IE modeling and scripting tools, etc... The current games, and therefore the current game Developers will never receive this type of fan support and loyalty with the direction they are heading in, IMHO. consoles might be easier, but "where's the beef?" Those games will be forgotten in a year. (again, IMHO

FW's just asking for help, guys. Not a lecture on "how to be a reporter".
