I am beginning to see why most people require permissions and review before someone posts a modified model. Please, if you are going to do the following to one of my models, DO NOT put my name on it.

yea, crappy ports are really uncool... moonraker is working on a REAL way to port models to m3d...

I just can't stand going to the site where it is posted, seeing my name on something like that, and then reading comments about how terrible of a modeller/texturer Interstellar Machine is from noobies who have just gotten into Trek gaming on the wave of a new release with no reguard to my modelling history or growth as an artist.

OK, rant over, adjusting my permissions from "you don't even have to give credit" to "DO NOT use my name on your ported, mangled mod!"

C'est la vie, mon ami. I did see you comment there, but had I not I was about to post a comment that provides the URL to this forum thread so maybe some otherwise-would-be-(insert your choice word here) would understand that you're not terrible a modeler/texturer. I don't think it's much of a defense given how people who strive not to be intelligent will always be so and would continue flaming, but it's the best I could've done. *shrug* If its any consolation, even the messed-up ship isn't totally bad. I like the original you made better, but the Legacy version seems like what I'd see Picasso nowadays; It just looks bad to a kid, but it's still not bad art!

Appriciate it Chris. To the Jame's credit, he contacted me and asked my permission. Because I have an open policy I said sure. So, I guess I get what I asked for by doing that. I have sent an e-mail to James (the "author") offering my assistance in correcting it. I have cooled down and am trying to be part of the solution. It could just be an extra creative way of doing interpreting Trek, art is in the eye of the beholder afterall.

Aww, the game has a lot of potential, it is a shame that it was not completed properly. I have successfully ported a number of my own models to the game for my own use, sadly though (and I am surprised at this) the newcomers can't even do a simple port without screwing up the mapping???

All you need is the Armada 2 Sod exporter and know how to create/set up models for Armada 2 (for now this works until there is a proper M3D exporter).

I have to say that I am impressed by the stance that you have taken on this Interstellar Machine, you are helping them out to correct their mistakes. Admirable. Perhaps this will be the first and last instance of poor porting for Legacy.

I like what Adonis did, bringing it to the site's attention. If those of us who frequent there notice something like that it'd be kind to point it out to the original author.
Try and keep in mind that it's done WITHOUT malice though before you get to fired up at the person who did the port. Offering assistance in the porting was a stand-up thing to do. +1 for that.
Now the ones who pull insults out of their ignorrant arses, I have no sympathy for. I hate people who think that they're freakin Siskel and Hebert and have to comment negatively about other peoples hard work and I personally think that they need to be publically humiliated for it.

Sorry, I digress.

I guess we are sorta in a position to mentor this young but fledging Legacy community. Not in a decending way, but wouldn't it be great if on their boards they are trying to figure out how to do something and we have built up our support such that one of them says, "I'll check with the SFC guys, they'll know how to do it."

I suppose a way to achieve that sort of reputation would not only to respond positively to port requests, but also be proactive in offering assistence to get it to look right. This "incident" has taught me some things.

I saw alot of odd stuff going on but with my computers being f***ed up or working half assed right now I can't be involved as I would like. Sometimes this happens in BC too, if you accedently select the wrong texture when porting. You get a mapping error.

Of course everyone's different. My readmes just say not to remove them if you redistribute the models. So, as long as they do that I don't have a right to complain if they do port them or whatever.
I guess that it's a side effect of the crack conversion process? Does anyone know if they're ever going to release a proper conversion plugin?

they guys from the Legacy community asked many times now for some plugins to export to Legacy and for the mission tools but all that Maddoc answered was they need more interest in this before they release anithing.

For those with postive attitudes and words... 2 thumbs up. The pluggin is needed, but remember the game has been out less then 3 months, and people are just starting to butche...

I mean porting in the only availible way possible. The particular port mentioned above was definetely botched, I've seen good ports already. A softer approach (atleast intially) is called for, unless you all want to repeat the fun of BC and SFC3 and OP and A2 etc... for those who want to repeat the war of words... welll darn it you are off my christmas card list!!! lol

Do you know what caused the original texture issue? What did you have to do to correct the texture?

I think what happened was that he downloaded the model as a .3ds mesh with which I included multiple bitmap textures, and he only converted and used one of them over the entire model. In addition to the texture problems, he also had no hard points.

All that I did was to set up the model like you would set up an Armada II model and then I exported it as a *.sod. I created TGA textures from my bitmaps and used the light maps as alphas. I added hard points by using the HP set from my Armada II Audacious and changed the mesh points to the same name as the two groups in the model that corresponded to the textures.

I think all James had to do was change the extension. He said the HP's work fine but I notice in the screenies that the light maps are not showing despite the included alphas. I am not sure how to make that work and can't really experiment with them as I do not have Legacy.

I am attaching the zip with source file and final product for anyone who wants to mess with it.
