I have been waiting for this game for a long time and I have to admit I am very, very disappointed. The graphics are good, but the controls are terrible and the game just isn't any fun. I played the first two missions and I don't think I'll play any of the remaining ones. This game might be OK if they patched it, but it's already been patched.

Save your money. This game isn't worth it. I wonder how I can get rid of mine. Perhaps eBay.......

call me a bit biased but I think KA was the best Trek game anyone EVER made, tho' I've retired it because online play is better on Dynaverse.

Its more a realistic space sim game, a sequel to the 1997 "Starfleet Academy" PC game.  It's not great in visuals, but nice storyline, a balanced game with Klingon, Federation, Romulan, Gorn, Tholian, and "Sha'kurian" (Think Hydran and Kzinti/Malak) species, with ships both canonical and non-canonical, all well made and balanced, although not as much ship choices when you pass the Klingon and Federation ship choices...  Remember the stock ship choices for Fed, Klink, Rom, and Gorn ships for SFC/SFC Volume 2?  Chances are, they're likely lower-poly versions of Klingon Academy starship models.

You can pilot around, go upside down while fighting ships, colliding into them (although after doing so you bump away like bumper cars without tearing into each other, ala Bridge Commander/KA Lite), assaulting starbases, fighting around in planetary rings, nebulae, gas giants, planetary atmospheres, inside a star, or near a black hole (accretion disk), warping around in-system (left and right turns to get to your target), breakable starship models, etc.

That sounds cool. I'll look for a used copy. I purchased Dominion War and never got it to work with my computer. Sometimes those old games don't work with XP

I don't have KA on my PC, but it mostly worked for my XP.  It may have an occasional problem with XP, resulting in its own version of the "Illegal Operation" crash adored since 3.11 or perhaps earlier, I guess.  However it isn't bothersome to the point where it drives you nuts...

Beware the fact that it comes in six discs (I think SFA came in five)... All those cinematic cut scenes with Christopher Plumber and David Warner reprising their Star Trek VI roles in this game (technically this game's a prequel to Star Trek VI).

As for Legacy, personally I'd like to try for myself, the likely chance being in the form of a Christmas present alongside some computer upgrades, but as Christmas presents both are too generous to probably be realistic, so I'll probably be busy building a model of the Enterprise while waiting for the next mission to load in Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force or something... Of the likelyhood chance I do get it and a good upgrade for my PC and I'm dissapointed, I'll have the upside of an upgraded computer.  While I'm growing more retro with my games (Elite Force, SFC, KA, a 1997 Star Wars game called "Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight", some console games beforehand), I don't think it'll hurt to try new ones.  As for keyboard controls, I hear a modder or two might've made a utility to rebind keys for Legacy.  Oh, and an old-school SFC modder since the Newships days in 1999-2000 (and afterwards) and KA for 2000-2001 has come back for Legacy (aside from occasional appearences here, this year).

hehe i can help with that go into your drive and find where its installed, then sort by "file type" then, well, just change all the "application/EXE" files by clicking properties and clicking the compatibility tab, then just clicking windows 95, or windows 98...

Sounds complicated..it isnt, and it should work...
Works with classic RTS games like "red-alert" so try it...

and yea Johnson, just a thing, buy games like that on PC-DVD, works well and you can go somewhere w/out having to change discs :)

Hey

before you try ebay, try getting the patches for dominion wars. they can be found at startrek-gamers.com, there is 4 of them, just use this link:

http://www.startrek-gamers.com/downloads/index.php?act=category&id=59

I'm not sure why the game is not working for you, i had it on win2000, and now on XP, and it works fine without any special modifications to both so go figure.

Another thing, also make sure the disc is in the cd drive, my pc wont let me play it without, but it could be different for you, who knows.

Hope this helps

I am still having problems. When I start the game, I get a video with a mountain and stars swirling around it. The game crashes at that point. I think I need to disable that video. Does anyone know how to do that?

ok, before i proceed with further tips, i need to know if you installed the 4 patches in the correct order. they should be installed starting from the earliest to the latest, in other words install patch 1.02 first, then 1.02 to 1.03 and so on.

If you done that right try this: after dowloading and unpacking those patches you should have a file called FAQ.txt. Thias file adderesses the kind of issues you are struggling with. I just scanned through it and some of the things you can do to make the game play properly include: lowering your screen resolution to 1024x768 16-bit, also you should have the latest drivers for your card and so on. These are just some of the things you can do. Try lowering the screen resolution first and see how that goes. If that doesnt work and you already have the latest drivers for the video card then study the file in greater detail to see what else may be in there that can help you.

I may have another idea on how to fix this but try all of the above first, if still unsuccessful post a reply and we'll go from there.

yea, the graphics are nice (for a pentium 1 game) but nowhere near what crappy games like legacy are spittin' out.

But the realism is stunning- like fighting the gravity of a black hole while battling a few bad guys.

My favorite trick in KA- tractor a bad guy and ram him into his wing, or an asteroid. Just like in SFC but better looking in 3D.
My favorite encounter in KA- rescuing the embassadors ship from the Tholians (actually capturing the feddie scum for your own needs)

MAN, I love that game. and that too was unfinished according to Interplay (which prolly went bankrupt because of the cost overrunsof this game). I hear it has been re-released on DVD and there is still an active modding community, tho' it's a bear to mod.

The screen resolution seems to help , but it still does not work. I think the patches didn't install correctly. I installed them in the right order, but I got an error message when I did so. It said a file was not found and the installation was aborted. I tried this several times, but they did the same thing each time. I don't know if the patch is corrupt or if there is another patch I need to install prior to 1.02
