$100 for SFC3? Say what?
« on: November 28, 2006, 06:51:12 pm »
I really enjoyed SFC1 back in the day, but missed out on 2 & 3 when they came out (was busy with life).  Just recently I started digging around online game reviews and decided to try and find SFC3 used, and was shocked to find how rare and expensive it is!   Other's here have mentioned that SFC2 or OP are just about as good, but I'd like to know more about how the two compare.   Any thoughts on if I should just forget 3 altogether?

Thanks,
M

You should be able to find a copy of orion pirates for around 5 to 10 bucks....

Op is the standard for SFC/SFB based play....

Need I say more? ;)

More like EAW/OP are light years better, especially if you enjoyed SFC1!
(not that I'm biased of course ;) )

SFC3 is more fast paced as compared to OP, where PvP matches in OP can realistically last around 30 minutes or more.  The ships in SFC3 are refittable, to add flexibility and make a ship more comfortable to each individual player.

The Dynaverse 3 is the same as Dynaverse 2, but unlike the D2, if a player engages in battle in the same hex as another on the D3, other players aren't drafted, but they can join in on the attack.  Also, on the D3, you can right click on a hex and see who is in the hex, be it allied or friendly pilots or AI.  Multiplayer skirmishes are the same when it comes to numbers, 6 players max.

SFC3 only allows you to have one ship at a time under your direct control, but you can approve 2 AI ships to fleet up with you, where as SFC2 and OP allow you to purchase 3 ships and fly them all the time.

SFC2 and OP however do engage you more in fleet actions, and can be quite enjoyable.  In OP and SFC2, fleet cohesion is emphasized more than it is in SFC3, but SFC3 also requires strong coordination and fleet support in order to win a campaign.

One of the downfalls of SFC3 is the 4 playable races.  Since SFC3 was rushed into production by Activision, Taldren wasn't able to finish the game code.  There were originally supposed to be 9 playable races in SFC3, with a ton more stock ships and weapons/systems, and the stardate clock was supposed to be programmed so that certain ships and systems wouldn't be available until a certain date, just as OP, but unfortunately, that never happened.

Well, crap.  Looks like OP is now going for more like $30-50 on ebay these days.  Did the rise in SFC3 prices somehow made everyone else greedy?

No, more like the diminished number of copies.  SFC3 is so expensive apprently because half the copies ever made were recalled by Activision and then destroyed.  Activision never supported the game, and it got horrible reviews from a great many people.  Even those who have devoted great amounts of time to modding SFC3 hate the fact that Activision screwed the game over.

Currently XenoCorp owns the access servers for the Dynaverse 2, meaning that the D2 access servers are under the control of the community.  Unfortunately, Activision decided to be little cry babies and kill the game off, but keep control of the D3 access servers.  Since Activision won't ever make replacement keys for the game, people want the CD Key more than just the CD itself, at least that's my theory.

Anyway, the fact that SFC3 was sought after because of its moddability, and the fact that a number of the original copies were recalled and destroyed, the prices for the remaining copies sky rocketed like crazy.

Also SFC3 has been going for $100 for a while now.  OP prices have only been going up recently.

not surprising that the rush a game and then drop it, whne i sold sfc3 it was around 35$ us, sure i would love to sell it higer but it was the price then, anyway i never like it since there was too many bad stuff in it, lack of ship and weapons, but the god thing in sfc3 was the possibility to get to warp speed inside a solar system and the reverse, but that alone was not enought to make it a great games

eaw and op are still good and there so much that can be add in mod (ships) that still make it a great game

i will not sell them :)

Well  Nuclear Wessels (aka Evil Dave (or Dad)) has made it so Warp Drive is available in OP now.  It's only set up for disengagement, but with enough prodding he might be able to be convinced to make it more like the SFC3 Tac Warp.

It's not surprising, and I have heard talk about possibly getting a tactical warp function within OP, but it was just talk.

The SFC3 code is just a highly modified version of the OP code.  Just that Taldren never had a chance to finish all the modifications it wanted to, as stated earlier.

Oh, on some mods for SFC3, you can actually move in reverse at impulse speed 100.0  Funny as hell.  :-D

Actually we've got tac warp working, but haven't put it in a mainstream mission yet while we try and assess the balance issues (needless to say, tac warping has a huge impact on races that rely on seeking weapons).  Including it as a disengagement technique was a less volatile way to start, we'll see where we get to from there ;)

This all came out of a pair of threads:
