You'll have to define "space sim" 'cause Freelancer really isn't one.  You'd have to go all the way back to Independence War to find a "space sim" in my opinion.

Other than that, I really don't know of much.  There's a few MMO's but nothing truly stunning....

EXCEPT Eve Online.

If you have the time and don't mind paying monthly, it's well worth the price. I don't play currently due to time constraints but it's really a great game.

Well, strictly speaking Orbiter is more of a space shuttle/spaceflight sim but well worth checking out:

http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/orbit.html

I have it on both laptop and desktop. It is free and when it says that it values realism you get your money's worth! Just try docking with the ISS slightly angle off or trying to switch direction suddenly and you will have a meeting with Mr. Gravity.

I highly recommend to all.

Home world 1 and 2 where pretty good, Space rangers one is ok also, I would shy from the second one, due to the Starforce CD thingie. I kinda like the ST Armada games also, SFC of course, that goes without saying.

Hope this helps.

Strictly speaking the Homeworld series is not a space sim but a real time strategy.

It is, however, AWESOME!

Thanks guys. I really don't want to build infrastructure, I just want to fly and shoot stuff, preferably online with multiplayer, but not paying a fee or having a steep learning curve as my time and funds are limited.  That said, I have spent a few minutes with the freelancer demo now and liked it and apparently there are still people playing it online.

I think Lyrekiller (CayneG) still plays it abit along with Soreyes. So you would even have some friends here to help get you started online.
