PHILCON 2006
« on: November 19, 2006, 09:52:57 pm »
Greetings Folks -

This isn't a D2 topic really, but I just attended over the last 2 days my first scifi/fantasy convention in Philadelphia.  I got in for FREE  ;D - thanx to a pal of mine being a panelist who had 1 guest pass at his disposal.  Saved $50.

Anyhow - there was a lot of stuff going on, not a lot specifically for TREK but some things.  In particular there was a 1 hour session called "Klingon 101" that was pretty cool.  A guy from the Klingon Language Institute led it  --  www.kli.org

A lot of folks had character type names on their convention badges and I went as "Bartok of d.net"  -- didn't think the guy wanted to type out dynaverse.   My buddy who was on some panels thought maybe i'd run into someone from here... you never know.

Anyone else ever attend these things??  -- I still want to go to a Star Trek Convention though I have no idea how frequently or if they still happen.

Cheers

I attended toronto trek about 10 years ago and they still do that one every year.  I was actually under consideration to be a panelist there about 5 years ago due to my on air promotion of voyager and ds9 at the time at the tv station I work for. I was doing fine during the phone interview that I was put through until the very end when the lady asked me if I had a costume to wear. I said I didn't do costumes and well it was a pretty quick end to the call and I never heard back.  ;D

Been to a few Origins Conventions. Mostly doing the D&D stuff and of course Starfleet Battles ;D

Funniest one I went to was here in San Jose CA. The largest group of people to show up and participate in there gaming was the Starfleet Battles folk. What made it kind of funny was that we weren't playing in the Convention Center. We were across the Street at the Holiday Inn. I think there were about 150 people there for the Patrol tournaments and for the if I remember right the "Operation Cavalry" Battle..... now that was a Hoot ;D

Well, haven't been to a really big one in a while, but, there's a local gaming convention that still goes on every year in the Tampa Bay area called Necronomicon. The biggest games that run here are the LARPs (Live Action Role Play). It's a weekend of costumed drunken characters mostly. But, they do have many other games running from AD&D to card games and almost everything in between.
Sadly, I didn't attend this year due to a heavy workload (it's always the last weekend in Oct). It's the first one I've missed in several years.  :(

I went this year, for the first time in about 8 years.  It's gotten kind of weak.  I went into the dealer's room and, at a sci-fi/fantasy gaming convention, it was full of nothing but new age crystals and pendants.  There wasn't a Star Trek video or gaming book to be seen.  I stayed about half an hour and left in disgust.
