Baby's first mesh
« on: July 17, 2007, 07:59:13 pm »
Hi all,

I really seem to be getting into this modelling lark, so I thought I'd try building my own meshes. Since I'm very beginner level, I thought I'd try something simple. So simple I even managed to map a texture to it! So, here it is:

Wha'd'ya think?  ;D

Actually, just kidding... kinda.

That cargo pod was indeed my first mesh. However, this is really what I was on about:

Now, I have managed to use Rick Knox a.k.a pneumonic81's Daedalus textures to map the main part of the sphere, but I have still to figure out how to use LithUnwrap to map the other segments of my mesh to Rick's textures (I am not ready to create such complex textures of my own yet). Here is the result below. Only the sphere is mapped "properly", and even the bridge flat & dome is messed up.

That said, you can see from this pic that the flat at the top of the sphere isn't textured at all. That's because it has only 1 vertice, apparently. I made it from a cylinder closed with a vertice, then chopped off the body of the cylinder. All the rim vertices are still there, but it still only shows as one. I don't understand why.

So, any help you can offer will be gratefully received! Are there LithUnwrap tutorials out there that I can't find?

Edit: Punisher, you're a riot.

Humm, looks interesting. I note that the end of the warp nacelles don't look quite "right".

Pretty cool mesh. Real good 1st project.

I have some UU3D video tuts that are pretty well done and the author references them to lithunwrap as well. He tells you if there's a function that he's using that you can't do in Lith and gives you the work around. I haven't seen anything specifically for lithunwrap though.
Are you on broadband? They're 5 vids weighing in at about about 300 megs total. I can upload them for you if you want?

Yup, I'm on a cable modem. I'd appreciate seeing those vids, Rod, if it ain't too much trouble for ya. Thanks for the comments.

Punisher, the aft end of the nacelles are just... flat. Both of them are simple, closed cylinders. As I learn more I'll be tarting this ship up, making her more and more complex. I've already got the next upgrade planned, and this one here is v3.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments! I plan to do a bit more work on her this weekend, if I can tear myself away from my kitbash projects.

Rod, thank you for the tutorials. I'll DL them over the weekend and see what I can come up with afterwards.
