For all of you stargazers out there
« on: November 13, 2006, 11:12:06 pm »
I just finished a program that allows me to predict (with reasonable accuracywhen a satelite will be visible, at what elevation and what azimuth.  As part of this project (for extra credit of course) i need to "pick" a location at least 50 miles away from the academy and either I or someone else must view a satelite.  If you all are interested in looking at some satelites (they should be visible to the naked eye) let me know.  Just PM your city and state and I can send you a list of some of the brightest satelites visible at your location, at what time, and where to look.

If it'll help your grade, sure.  Cleveland, OK.

Although, starting Saturday, I'll be on a ship in the Carribean for 7 days.

it would, but in classic style the department only gave us a week to really test our programs (ie the report is due by friday).  Alls i need is you to find just one satelite w/ that info ;) (i think i gave you enough so you'll have somewhat of a choice when you want to go looking, if ya need more let me know).  But if you want go looking for satelites for the hell of it while your out on your cruise just let me know and i'll put together some info.

The zip is only the .dat file.  What do I open it with?  Also, it's cloudy tonight.  I'll look tomorrow evening.

You might be able to, depending the brightness of the satelite. However my guess is that inside or right by the city there would be to much ambient light so it would have to be real bright.  the only thing you would probably be able to see is the ISS (that is real bright)

It was cloudy again last night.  Clear as a bell tonight though.  I'll get you a couple of verifications.  You did see it was Cleveland OKLAHOMA, and not Ohio?

Hook me up with some sats here (near) Cherry Hill, NJ, for this Sunday evening, but they'll have to be "high in the sky" due to the fact that South Jersey is FLAT and it's tough to get up over the tree line!

here ya go, i put the ISS on top for ya, it should pass over at 6:36am est on sunday.  As i said before all times are in UT so for EST subtract 5 hours.  to open the file just use note pad.  enjoy :).  o and there are no elvations below 30 degrees, hopefully that will get you over the trees, if it doesn't i saw a few 70 degree ones in that list that will.

OK, I THINK I spotted these.

OAO 3 (COPERNICUS)

OPS 8180 (RADCAT)

SL-8 R/B

I checked myself with Starry Night Pro's telescope slewing software.

Hey, also to all you stargazers:

http://skytonight.com/observing/home/4663951.html

The Leonid meteor shower- Saturday night at roughly 11:45 PM EST!

The last meteor shower I saw made me think of one of the ending scenes in TNG's Redemption, part II, right before the Duras sisters stomp into the room in their combat boots theatrically announcing, "Defeat!"  You know, when Klingon disruptor bolts or torpedoes were raining down on targeted sectors of the capital city from ships out of sight above the atmosphere of Q'onos...

(... I was wondering at that time of the meteor shower how many Klingons were scattering out of the way!)
