A Tale of Woe...
« on: October 31, 2006, 10:34:14 pm »
For over a month I continually have been getting the dreaded firewall message when trying to get on the Dynaverse.
Not "directory servers not found", just " A firewall is present or you are not on line".
Two complete reinstalls have proved futile.
I can play single player just fine...
I was on The Forge after SGO6...
Tried after a week away doing other things and started getting those damned messages.
After a few days of fruitless attempts, saw a few other posts about similar issues and thought "Well, maybe it's just some network issue, it's not just me."
I was patient...
I've been over my settings a thousand times now...
Nothing has changed...
No one else uses this computer to mess things up...
I'm getting really pissed... :banghead:
I can play ANY other game on line at will...
BattleField 2, MechWarrior:Mercenaries, Combat Flight Sim...
BUT I CAN'T GET THIS ONE TO FRIKKING WORK, DESPITE HOURS OF EFFORT!  >:( :banghead: >:(

Any suggestions... :-\
Besides blowing the damed thing up...Believe me, I've already considered that one...several times... :-\

And because I forgot to say and I'm sure I'll be asked...
I now use only windows firewall
OS: Win XP 64

And I ALWAYS shut it down before playing any online game.
NEVER had any issues like this before, in years of play...

Greetings LK !

This sounds horrible...  do you have any antiviral/anti-spyware stuff on?  Your problemo kinda stumps me, but i'm chugging away (probably not much longer) with Win2K on 4 year old machine,  not sure what XP issues contribute...

I hope you get er fixed at some point soon - I've got a temporary server up while the Forge be down

Krueg, do you shut it down in the Security Center? If so it's not completely shut down. You need to go into services and stop the Windows Firewall service.

I usually go to the firewall stting under the control panel and shut it down there.
And I have confirmed it's off thru the "currently running programs" several times while attempting to resolve this issue.
This is also the same way I've done it since I started playing this game...

And I've swept the entire system for any spyware, etc. about 50 times since this problem started, none ever found.

I used to use ZoneAlarm, but since I got the newer system several months ago, with the WIN 64 bit OS, the only (free) Anti-Ad Ware program I use has been Windows Defender.
Right now, I have none, since I uninstalled Defender in an attempt to get on line.
I also use Avast AV, but shutting it down also has no effect.

I'm just so frustrated and baffled with this crap...

What I don't understand is I've been playing on this system for months...played on The Forge both before and after SGO6...played all the way through SGO6...nothing was changed, altered, etc...just started out of the blue...
Yes, I am on DSL, but have never had to forward any ports or anything before, no changes in service, same modem...
One week I could get on with NP, then this constant, damning firewall message.  :banghead:

I know you said you shut it down via control panel, and it doesn't show up as running in taskmanager, but maybe go to services and disable it instead of just turning it off? ... maybe it's restarting somehow?  Any "Windows Updates" since this problem started?

So - is this 64bit thing Windows Vista? --

Go to Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services

Look for the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. If it shows as running, it is not completely off. Right click on it and click Stop.

If you want to permanently shut it off, right-click on it and click Properties, and make sure Startup Type is set to Disabled on the General Tab.

I would do this before troubleshooting anything else.

Only thing I can suggest is to contact your service provider, and DEMAND to know ANY changes in their configuration or settings within the last few months(from the time of the problem).  Most likely they will not disclose any, but be persistant.  Eventually they will put you in contact with the person who makes any and all changes in their system.  If there was a change in their system, someone knows about it, but may not remember.
My only experience with the firewall message actually never had me  do much other than to restart my computer a couple times, so I realize my suggestion may not be the true answer, but with overall experience, I have found my online provider has always found the problem and fixed it.

Sounds like the problem I had for a year and a half.  Check and see if your modem has 2 IP addresses, if it does you need to configure it to a SINGLE STATIC IP.  As soon as I did that No Problems Even with firewall on(Zonealarm).

I WISH I had 2 IPs for the price of one... :-\

Yeah, this is about my last resort, but, am planning to do this. In the past, I too have occasionally gotten a firewall message, ususally solved with a game reboot. But I tried that about 30 times in a row without any success.

Maybe your trying too hard, I ran Norton firewall while playing on the forge for quite a while without problems. I've since disabled it to get the lag under control, but you might try 'playing nice' with your firewall.

Just setup your firewall to allow all comm traffic with the SFC program, and see what happens.

Actually, I tried that after I'd run out of other ideas...still nothing...
It's gotten to the point I just have to let it go for a while again, gets too frustrating.
Already broke my keyboard slide tray off the desk when I banged my fists on it after about 2 hours of fracking around with it.  :banghead:
Then spent 30 min fixing that.... ::)

Sorry to gravedig, and I'm sure this is an insanely silly idea, but did you reinstall OP at some point and forget the directory servers update patch?
