OT: "Star Trek Encounters" Game
« on: October 11, 2006, 07:52:34 am »
Last night I had heard that Block Buster was selling a bunch of used games for $9.99. Looking through the pile I found "Star Trek Encounters." Apparently it is an arcade style shooter for the PS2 inculding 5 different eras and the ability to play 60 different ships. Suposedly it just came out, so I thought it was weird that it was in the used game isle.

Anyone know anything about it?

apparently its a really kickass game :P very similar to SFC3 :P just get it and try it for 10 bucks
Alternate universe:  Khan was banished for preserving the peace. The Genesis device was really a super weapon and kirk had planned to use it on the klingons. Chekov found the Botany Bay and khan hijakced and killed the evil reliant crew in an effort to destroy the genesis device.    Ahh i love it :D The alternate universe rocks.

I would have, if I had a PS2, so I got Republic Commando instead.

To me, the gameplay looks too much like the vehicle stages in Lego Star Wars II.  It's almost " Gauntlet Trek".

1.  The graphics aren't anything spectacular even for the PS2.  More along the lines of slightly-better-than-stock SFC community models.

2.  Too much sweeping of the phasers.  Much of that gameplay seems to be swinging the phasers desperately trying to hit something.

3.  On that subject, phasers can kill just about anything in the universe from battleships to weapons platforms in short order.  I actually remember enemy ships actually posing some threat to the whateverprise.

4.  Once again, torpedoes don't actually act like torpedoes.  They don't even arc one lousy degree.  The mines are actually more useful, and only as defensive weapons.  Maybe against a PLANET a Torpedo may be useful, only because the odds of missing are slim (unless you REALLY suck).

5.  Yes, it is narrated by Shatner.  But it sounds more like listening to an audio book than anything else.

6.  If you're outnumbered, never fear!  The GRISSOM will come to fight with you!  And only after you've decimated several fleets of enemy ships!  Don't you feel safer now?

7.  It's a $15 game that no one's heard of until recently.  It basically looks like a budget version of Legacy without the beutiful graphics, online play, or third dimension, for PS2 owners who aren't getting a 360 or have a low-end PC.

8.  This game loses more points in my eyes simply because it's made by Bethesda, makers of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.  After the incredible living world of Oblivion, this game looks like utter crap compared to what I know Bethesda is capable of.  Even for a budget title, I expect more from those guys, not an arcade remake of Armada.

The only plusses I can find is that you can play as the Enterprise-D (Favorite...ship...EVER), and it supports more than one player.  And I've already got both with my copy of Orion Pirates that I got for $5 off of Amazon.  And I do it with FAR better models and textures made by people with a passion for Trek gaming.

Encounters is already out?  Damn, I need my main computer back.
The pen is truly mightier than the sword.  And considerably easier to write with.

 >:(

Why doesn't bethesdasoft have the ST: Encounters page up to show us the ships?

If they are anything like the ST: Tactical Assualt game, I will skip this one as well as ST: Legacy

check out this:

http://startrek.bethsoft.com/games/ta-ships-klingon.html

The 'KDN' looks like a FASA Trek Komo Val/Kmirra crossed with an L-20 fast BB.

Also IIRC the FASA D-20 look like the Klingon ship with the warps in the upright position.

The Tactical Assualt Romulans are horrid looking and the Feds aren't much better.

Qapla!
