Chemical fire in Apex, NC
« on: October 06, 2006, 12:52:58 am »
I know we have several board members in the Raleigh/Apex area.  I'm hoping and praying all of you are safe.  So far I haven't been able to get in touch with my sister, but the school being used as the emergency shelter is the school her children attend, so I'm telling myself they are all okay.

No, I haven't heard from her since about a week after she went back there.

Again, I pray our board members here are safe and well.

I got several friends that live there from my time in NC also....

Hope they are all doing well.

I don't think we need to worry about Puddleoguts b/c IIRC, he lives in Durham country north of the city.

I finally got in touch with my sister.  Her house was on the edge of the evacuation zone but they're doing fine.  Most of her in-laws were evacuated but are doing okay and going back home tonight.

It could have been worse...

Yeah.. it wasn't just a checmial plant.. it was a hazardous chemical disposal facility..

*shudder*

I went to a fire at a Monsanto plant in Cedar Creek, NC once when I was a volunteer fireman.  I haven't seen my Bageezus since.

I also heard back from two of my friends, they are doing alright.

They live on the Cary/Apex line and are out side the evacuation area.

Their office is in the zone, so no work for them for a while (they are both optomitrists)

They said everyone else is doing ok also.

You don't put out chemical fires...they burn out.

My mom works for the department that handles such things...according to a report, the fire was suspicious in that it only involved one particular building and no others. Also, before being bought out the previous owners had paid mega fines the last few years.

It was a heck of a light show though and my CAPunit was briefly called out to help with the evacuations. Man, that was a long night!
