What are activity levels at the moment? What server got most of activity and what mods, if any, are needed?

The Forge server is the most active right now of the 3 casual servers up. We are in between serious campaigns right now/

Information for the Forge is pinned at the top here of the D-2 experiences. You will need OP installed then the 2552 patch and firesouls 4.0 version and the mission pack. All this information and some links are on page one of the pinned forge thread.

Thanks for info. I believe I have most relevant stuff installed, though I would feel more comfortable if I could just delete all and start again with clean installation and up to date versions of mods. I don't have CDs at hand though, so if I have old version of The Forge already installed, I just hope that new version can be installed over it.

I believe most of that were packed on one zip or installation file and shortcuts are year old. I don't even know or remember what all of those do or how they are used. Do I need any of those to play The Forge and are updates required?

What faction needs new players? I don't want end up to be lone member of least popular faction and joining to most popular doesn't sound balancing. By the way, can players of same faction trade resources between each other?
