A question for you home netork gurus and/or HP v40xi users...
« on: October 07, 2006, 11:43:25 pm »
Having no luck geting an HP v40XI all-in-one printer to be recognized for printer sharing by a laptop computer linked into my little home network.

HP site worthless except for a little tidbit I found comparing v40 series to k80 series, for v40xi "network capable - no (but the print driver can be shared over a Windows network).

Just what the heck does that mean?

You should be able to share it from a machine it's connected to, then choose "have disk" when the printer wizard tries to install it, and use the software that came with the printer.

Thanks for the response but I think I phrased it wrong. The v40xi is already installed and operating with my desktop clunker. I ran through the share wizard setup on the clunker but the laptop won't find it.

Miracle of miracles, I actually got a tech support reponse from HP tech, but its by email so this may take a while.

UPDATE: Got this working solution from HP (quickest tech support I've ever encountered :D):

===On the Desktop PC===
1) Click start and select run.
2) Type cmd and click ok.
3) Type ipconfig and press enter button on th keyboard.
4) Please make a note of the IP address of the desktop.
Further, I request you to follow the steps given below.
1.  Click on Start >> Settings >> Printers and faxes.
2.  Right click on the all-in-one icon and click on Sharing.
3.  In the new page that opens up, please provide a Share name, selecting the option to "Share".
4.  Then, click on Apply and OK.
===On the Laptop ===
1.  Click on Start >> Run.
2.  In the open field, type two back slashes without the brackets ( \\ ), followed by the IP Address of the HOST PC.
3.  A network window will appear showing all the shared resources of the HOST PC. Right click on the all-in-one icon and select "Connect" option. A new pop-up will appear stating connecting.
4.  After certain amount of time, the connecting window would disappear.
Please close this window.
5.  Now, open the printers and faxes folder on the laptop by  following the steps given below.
*  Click on Start >> Settings >> Printers and faxes.
*  You would find a new icon with a name similar to
Officejet v40xi series on <IP Address of Desktop PC>
You can use this printer for all your future print jobs.
