Maps
« on: September 29, 2006, 04:30:20 pm »
I'm thinking about starting a server up, whether people want to join it or not is another matter entirely but just as an experiment I'd like to see what I can do this time around.

My main concern is the map itself. I'd like to construct a map that reflects the "reality" of the known Trek universe as much as possible but also realise that factors such as alliances and race ship abilities play a huge role in determining a good map.

I have several maps already that show the positions of such notable points of interest such as Wolf 359, Gamma Hydra in the Neutral Zone , Vulcan Space, Romulan and Klingon space that I can translate into a Dynaverse map but none really show definitively where the Kzinti or Lyrans should be, nor the Gorn or Hydrans aside from the included maps. There have been other server maps but I wasn't around when some were in play and don't want to just copy one.

If I'd stayed around I might have a better idea of what you guys have come to expect or prefer so that is the point of this post. Another alternative I was toying with was to have limited races but I'd prefer not to do that. I think inclusive would be better than exclusive although I'm willing to listen to folks here of course.

Anyway, enough of the rambling from me, what would you prefer to see?

Here is something not directly related but that you might find of some interest if you haven't seen it already.

Not so hot, hard to exactly say since with fewer numbers players are switching races alot more often.

In general I'd say about 2-3  regular Gorns, 3-4 regular Kzin, 3-4 regular Hydrans 2-3 regular Romulans, 2-3 regular ISC, 5-6 regular Lyrans, 7-15 regular Feds and 7-15regular Klingons.  Throw in another 10 as Variable.

Thats just an offhand estimate based on my observations.

For servers where you attract a good RM to gather players together on both sides, peak hours will see the server with 20-35 players...

Unproven yet but I'd venture that on servers where you get Dizzy to be the RM for one side, peak hours would see a server with 19-34 players on one side and Dizzy alone on the other  ;D

That is interesting that I have yet to see (short time here though) a historical Dyna map.  I guess the Pirate one was, but then we were all flying Pirate ships so it didn't matter,..

Everyone talks about the imbalances created when races not "hysterically" meant to be near each other end up fighting.

So why is it most Dyna maps are not F and E style ?  Mabye with some fun variation thrown in?  I am guessing an issue with player balances ??  guessing ?
