Dynaverse timing, filling a server with players
« on: September 22, 2006, 09:32:11 am »
I had suggested this a while ago and after reading Dizzy recent post on SGO about a possible change in how hex ownership might be handled I thought I would throw this ideal out again.

If a Dyna server were set up to be on during certain hours say 6pm till 2 am you would force a clustering of playing during that time.  It would "feel" as if the dyna server were in the old days as everyone would have to be on during those times.

Furthermore the clustering would prevent the situations where one team has many players for while.  It would be a big help in addressing this goose problem/ideal.

You really wouldn't have to shift players once you got a feel for who regularly played, my guess is you folks know that already?  If folks could only play during a certain window, well then that is when the teams would show up.

Some of the responses before were what about folks in Australia, how can they play,.. or what about 3rd shifters?  My question is are there really that many folks who are out of the main US time zones?   Doesn't most everyone here have the ability to watch a US football game ?  If so then you could play on a time limited Dyna server.

Lets go way out on a limb and suggest what if a server were up only on weekends when even third shifters can play form like noon till midnight.

The last issue brought up before was what about the hex flippers,..  Well didn't they also flip hexes when the servers were crowded in the old days ?

Go on shoot it down again   :-\

Well only if they are really hot.

Seriously it is the needs of the one,.. or the many   :-X

Well maybe those folks would adjust their playing times,.. agreed the risk is they will not play.

I just worry that overall there will be a decline in the many years to come of attendance.  I feel that the flying geese is an example of what is occurring.  As player loads go down we are seeing loopsided attendance become more common.  The more folks there are the less that was a problem.  With less folks that is more of an issue now.

I just wonder if focussing the play time may solve some issues.

Plus I think it might be a real hoot to see 30 players on a server at once.  I feel that many others may feel the same way.  People talk of the good old days,.. well they are still there if you set it up right.

Those hex flippers that fly in wee hours of the morning,..  well,.. um,...

anyways   :)

PS Dizzy I just got done reviewing the history in the mods forum and was chuckling at the stir YOU caused with the Tholians back in SGO3,..  talk about "me" screwing people ,...    :o

Currently servers are on 24 hours,.. so when do folks play.  They play whenever it is convenient to them.

If they had to play at a certain time here is the results that I see would occur.

1)  Some folks a small percentage could not play for whatever reason.

2)  The majority of folks (Because they are die hard fanatics) would simply explain to the wife that this screwball Skaren suggested to Dizzy that the server have hours.  Now Dear I am reserving this time for my favorite game.  The server would be packed with those players

The more you shrink the hours the more packed it is and the more players would have to drop.

Pushing it to the extreme,... If you had a one hour server it would be real crowded but more and more folks would not be able to make that hour.

That call, on how much to shrink it and when to run it, is best made by folks with lots O experience.  If you liked the ideal.

See Tobin That's the spirit   :)  What time zone you in, if the server went till 2 in the morning it may be the best flying time you have seen?  What about weekends ?  days off ?  etc.  Just a thought, sure not everyone will benifit from it, but most will.

We have a lot of players on the North American East Coast, a lot on the North American West Coast, a lot in the UK, a couple in Australia, at least one in Finland, and at least one in Germany.  We've had a few in Hawaii and From time to time one of our players is in Japan.

I think you'd be better off trying to pick a couple of days a week rather than a couple of hours a day.

Made this suggestion ages ago.  Probably someone made it before I did.  No one favors it for all the reasons that will be forthcoming from others than myself.

We are a world campaign, though nobody likes getting their supply line cut while they are sleeping/working we all don't live on the same schedule.

Right and this idea as presented, would cut off quite a few of our regulars.

There are still players from Oz (and Europe) who regularly play on servers. Having a specific US time server only will not allow us to join in all the fun during the week!  :-[

Hey I loved my Tholians mainly because everyone else hated them. That's why I like you so much Diz... I say bring back the Tholians!! Oh glorious T-bomb heaven Mmmmmmm good times.

As far as servers only being avail certain times. A very large portion of our community (what's left of it) is not on anything that would resemble a normal schedule once you consider time zones all across the world, working graveyards or what have you, some sort of life, kids, familys. It's all most of us can do to steal a small chunk of time to get on here and trying to put that on a schedule seems to disagree with those factors that we have to deal with trying to get a moment to ourselves.

This comes up every now and then but what you really should be talking about is fixing magic photons, banning the K-D5D, banning Soreyes from flying anything smaller than a BCH, banning Fluf from the CVA, Banning Chuut from using pictures in his posts, Carefully migrating squirrels into J'inns area, Banning the CCZ, Banning hornet IIIs but just from Deadman and Bearslayer, Forcing Deadman to only wing with me if he wants to play, and removing all direct fire weapons from DieHards ships. Oh and I'd also recommend stealing Hondo's hot tub.

Now this will get a far better discussing going than this topic. People love those threads I swear...
