The Prototype Ship of this class, the U.S.S. Akira was launched in 2368.
A newer vessel in the Federation fleet, the Akira Strike Cruiser serves a dual role in the fleet as both a bombardment support cruiser and as a fleet carrier.
Equipped with a formidable array of photon torpedo launchers, the Akira operates excellently in support of larger cruisers and can go toe to toe with about any similarly sized enemy warship.
The ability to deliver small fighter or armed shuttlecraft into a fray doubles its utility.
Several Akira-class vessels fought in the combined Alpha Quadrant fleet that invaded Cardassia in late 2374, and three were destroyed by Cardassian orbital weapon plattforms at the Chin'toka Sytem.
The Akira-class starship was designed by Alex Jaeger at ILM.
It was rendered as a computergenerated visual effect.
Named for the animated fantasy film.

**The pathfinder USS Akira has had its hardpoint and textures altered to give it a more "prototype" feel, as it is slightly less powerful than the other Akira-class starships; also note that the newest Akira-classes (i.e. registry numbers in the 80000s) all are equipped with Type XII phasers, quantum torpedoes, and cloaking devices.

Thanks everyone, I thought about that F_W but the textures are basically the same accecpt for the names and regs and there's only one model in high,med and low res. SO there's absolutely no variation. I thought it would be stupid to HP the Akira and not have the weapons match the textures ya know ? Best I could think of is use ship edit to change the stats on shield and energy on the later models to make them stronger and add more to the phasers and photon refills.  ;)
