SFC3-generated feature-length epic
« on: September 08, 2006, 10:18:26 am »
I hope I'm not annoying people by starting a new topic on this, but the subject line of the old topic on Borg War is misleading. What I'd like to do is to use this topic for discussion of the actual film and to give this board a heads-up as each episode is released.

As many of you know, Borg War is a feature-length animated Star Trek fan film starring the voices of Patrick Stewart, Tim Russ and Brock Peters.

Borg War, which was created using Trek-themed computer games, was nominated last year in two categories for the "Mackie", an award given to game-generated video projects.

Borg War Episode 1 is now available for download and streaming at the following link:

http://www.machinima.com/films.php?id=4765

The eight remaining episodes will be released on Machinima.com each Friday over the next eight weeks. Each Friday at 9pm Pacific, Machinima.com will host a live forum to discuss Borg War and how to do Star Trek-themed animation using inexpensive computer games. The forum is at:

http://www.machinima.com/PHPBB/viewforum.php?f=35

If you've got the time, join me there. Needless to say, I'm happy to discuss the movie here in whatever aspects might interest people. In particular, I was thinking that folk on this board would be interested in specifics about how I manipulated SFC3's rather basic "film room" mode to do so many different weird effects.

Summary: Jureth, eldest son of the House of Mi'qoch, suspecting that the Empire faces a Borg invasion, calls upon the Federation for help. Captain Picard sends Captain Tuvok to investigate using the Dallas, a Defiant-class ship highly modified for reconnaissance in Borg space. Meanwhile, General Mi'qoch (patriarch of the House) must use the power of the Empire's heaviest-armed Starbase to defeat a Borg menace unlike any the Alpha quadrant has seen before.

Download or stream it from here:

By the way, Borg War Episode 1 broke all the records for weekend views on Machinima.com -- the equivalent (in the world of Machinima animation) of getting top boxoffice receipts.

Episode 4 of Borg War is available at:

http://www.machinima.com/films.php?id=5433

In this episode, Picard's team of experts (including Kleeya, daughter of Seven of Nine) determines that the incursion is the result of an exobiological infection that has taken control of a Borg colony. Despite opposition of the House of Mi'Qoch, Picard plans to use hybrid Federation/Romulan technology to cripple the threat, potentially destroying the Klingon/Federation alliance

Stephen:
Thanks for your kind words.  One minor note, though.  Borg War is not the product of a group, but of a single individual, working entirely alone.

Machinima.com, the site that's hosting the release of Borg War, just issued this press release. It's a bit, well, formal, but I thought that the information it contains is interesting, because most machinima gets popular because people play the game.  Since Borg War was done with two games that don't much of a player base, the only reason Borg War could have performed so well is because Star Trek fans are supporting it.  Which makes me happy, because that's why I made it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“BORG WAR” DEFEATS “RED Vs BLUE”

Independently-produced Star Trek feature film dethrones long-standing popular machinima video.

Los Angeles, CA – October 10, 2006 – Machinima.com, the largest machinima movie distribution network, announces that Episode 1 of Borg War, a feature-length animated Star Trek adventure, achieved more downloads in September 2006 than Episode 1 of “Red vs Blue,” the perennial winner since its debut in July of 2003.

“This is the first time that any machinima video has outperformed ‘Red vs Blue’,” says Ingrid Moon, head of production and programming at Machinima.com, who noted that subsequent weekly episodes of Borg War have also proven popular.  “On its best days, ‘Borg War’ has been responsible for almost 10 percent of our total traffic, which is amazing considering that we host several thousand videos,” Moon says.

With hundreds of thousands of downloads a month, Machinima.com is the community focal point for the rapidly-growing filmmaking technique known as machinima, which harnesses the 3D rendering power of computer games to create a new type of video entertainment.

Episodes of Borg War are being released every Friday exclusively on Machinima.com through November 3rd.

“Borg War” features the voice talents of original Star Trek series Patrick Stewart, Tim Russ and the late Brock Peters, whose performances were revived using the voiceovers included in the games used to create the movie.

Episode 8 of Borg War is available!

In this next-to-the-last episode, Picard tries desperately to find a weakness in the Borg flagship before the master Borg intelligence discovers that the Enterprise is disguised as a Borg cube. Meanwhile, Tuvok and the Mi'Qoch clan must survive hordes of mutant spider-Borg to discover the secret of the Borg invasion. See this episode at:

Borg War is finally complete! With 120,000 downloads/views even before the final episode was released, Borg War is already the world’s most popular independently-produced, feature-length animated Star Trek movie. ("Very Cool!" -- Tim Russ)

For the next few days, the entire movie can be downloaded (high res, mp4 or wmv, no watermarks, director's cut) from:

http://www.machinima.com/films.php?series=Borg%20War

I’m not certain how much longer I’ll be able to keep that pristine version available, so if you want this movie for your own computer for future viewing and sharing, you’d be wise to download the files this weekend.

I want to thank the fan community for pushing me to make this the best movie I was capable of making.
Any and all comments are appreciated.

That is so cool!

I just watched the first episode, and it was awesome to see the game used in that way. Seeing that stuff brought back a lot of memories... oh and I'd also like to apologize for the sucky tractor beam effect  :-[

Good stuff, and congrats on its popularity.

Gee, I kinda liked the tractor beam.  One of the ways my pals and I used to play SFC3 was to see who could tractor a dead hulk out of the quadrant.  We'd keep targeting each other's tractor beams and yanking the hulk away.  SFC3 - especially if you get into modding it -- is simply the best game I've ever played.  Thanks!

As a quick update, the online version of Borg War (available just about on every video site) has hit 250,000 download mark. As a result, $2,500 has been donated out of my own pocket to help Ethiopian orphans, mostly to buy toys, food and medicine at an orphanage in Addis Ababa that serves about 400 HIV+ children. My thanks to all the people who downloaded!

Kephran, just to be on the safe side, I'd send Frey a Pm about this. I'm sure he won't mind, but it's bestter to ask permission on something like this.

BTW, I think it's a great thing your doing, I just don't want you to get in any trouble bro.
