pretty good computer upgrade compromise
« on: September 03, 2006, 01:43:43 pm »
I can't yet afford to completely upgrade and switch to the dual core, SATA and PCI EX technology. so i chose a socket 939 AMD single core 3800+ 2.4GHZ (overclockable to 2.7)  A64 processor and a MSI Mobo that supports both 4 SATA and 4 ATA IDE with RAID for both and PCIX16 and old PCIX1 expansion slots. I already have a PCIx16 graphics card (a radeon 700 pro.)

This MOBO supports apparently CPUs more advanced and currently outside my budget. so it will remain upgradeable for some time.

http://www.atacom.com/program/print_html_new.cgi?cart_id=5170898_64_12_116_137&Pagecode=SEARCH_ALL&Item_code=MBA9_MICS_K8_V7&USER_ID=www

the MOBO cost 70 bucks and the processor cost 112 dollars.

Processor:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103531

I think i got a very good upgrade; essentially a whole new almost state of the art computer for less than 200 dollars because i can use my old modem, sound, DVD and hard drives.

Did you ever get around to upgrading the Video card?

That sounds like a good deal you got there Jerry.

Yes i did. i got a radeon 700 pro from the PX on my military star card. it is a 200 dollar card. PCI express X16. with 512MB video memory.
and i now have a backup 60 dollar budget card (also a radeon) and the mobo i am currently using has a radeon 200 on it. so i have triple redundancy on video.

Too sweet. I've been working on a backup Win98 system over here, Just because I'm tired of messing with a dual boot. Once you go more then one monitor though, It's hard to go back.

That reminds me, I need to update you with Oblivian. I have the other Mod's for that game , I think two more then the CD we grabbed for ya.

I saw , Believe it or not, a 1TB external HD at walmart the other day. The next few months... well, I'll be saving up for that bad boy.

i got quite a few mods myself. :) but i am having trouble getting Ren's beauty pack mystic elf to unpack to the appropriate folders. the hair textures are missing. i got the face and ears to go into the game but not the hair. i think the proper file is on TES source but i cannot remember my log on info. copies from other sites are not unpacking to the apropriate folders and my attempts to manually do it so far have not been right. except for the face, ears etc.

i think i got about double the amount of Mods you gave me. so two CDs full now.

Oh that is a good deal! and multiple treatment is necessary. now you need to invest in an air tight container for the dog food and you will be good.

Dude we did that Friday, check out the Sirgod goes to the store thread in H&S. But yes, I found a 48 quart container, with no Manufacturing holes at walmart. It holds about 45-50 lbs of dogfood, and is air tight.

Heh, If you do check out that thread, You will love the part of me having to wash Charlotte.

At first Denise was almost upset, Because I told them to come on out, and let's get it started, But when I explained about the recurring service, she turned very happy, and has been cleaning like no ones buisness.

The great thing is, IS sure we will kill the adults, but within weeks, the eggs will die also.

You'll get a kick out of it. Hell I had a call today with Capt. Mike, and he rode my ass also about getting out of the house. I'd swear I was talking to you. :P

Now If I can just remember that you no longer live in Davis county, and are safe from fires. Man I don't know what I was thinking when I Pmed you about that. For some reason, I could have sworn that Davis was down in SE Ok.

Well I know that now, But for some reason, My brain a few weeks ago Made up it's mind that the Fires in Davis was near you.

But yeah, we've had some great Rain here also the last week or so. It plays hell with the Sateliite, But man, We so needed it.

Man next time you visit, you won't recognize the deck we built. I've been pouring bag after bag of white rock between the ramp and the home, and I even have most of the Grass killed. The hard part was the sand kept draining all the Diazinon I would put down. But IMHO, It's starting to look pretty darn good.

Not yet, and It was just a fluke that I was able to buy the rock I did.

When We got that Ridding lawn mower, It came with a $150.00 gift card from lowes. I used that for rock and weed killer. Right now, I hav the Rock around her airconditionare, but I'll have to beg plead and scream to get enough to finish it up, although she does want It all around her trailer.

It's not to bad a deal though, each bag is about a buck Fifty, but when you start looking at 3-4 hundred bags...

One would have thought that fall would have been enough to convince her to put up a safe rail system rather than take it out on Stephen and his "pathetic" friends. :P

Well between you and me, thinking isn't her strong suit. I love her to death, But she is mean spirited.

the sad thing is, I feel sorry for Brett more then anyone. She get's mad at Alan and takes it out on that boy. Then again, I should buck up and Just pput the rails up myself.

The last time I tried something like that (I went to build a bench so she had a place to sit when she was using her Grill), she got ticked off, and ordered me to stop. Hell, I was just bored as all get out, and thought she might like it.

Don't get me wrong, she can be a nice person, but she does need to learn to direct anger at those who deserve it rather then expect me and you to be whipping boys. That Just don't fly.

Should have gone with an Nvidia instead...

BUT

how is the radeon 200 and what can it handle?  I was tempted to get a budget computer with one of those in it, which version of Pixel shader does it have, and can it run current games or does it have difficulties with any of the current game releases?

When my custom built computer fried its CMOS i had to go get a budget box machine at the only place i had credit. The PX. so i bought a presario sr1810nx. it had a radeon 200 series built in the mobo. i believe it is actually a radeon mobility 200. i will google it's specs.

so i chose a socket 939 AMD single core 3800+ 2.4GHZ (overclockable to 2.7)

This MOBO supports apparently CPUs more advanced and currently outside my budget. so it will remain upgradeable for some time.

I don't know if you are aware of this but the 939 pin socket is being replaced by the AM2 socket and at the same time DDR memory replaced by DDR2.  The CPUs are not compatible between the two sockets.  If you plan to upgrade the CPU before all the 939 pin chips are gone keep a very close eye on the market or you may find that the CPUs compatible with 939 pin are totally off the market and your upgrade path is blocked.

Thanks for the head's up but even so i cannot afford to upgrade any higher at the moment.even if i cannot upgrade with that  new MOBO later i still needed better than i currently have. a 3200 sempron running at 1.7. (my amd athlon 3000+ 2.14 GHZ) MOBO died leaving me with the present econobox and all but unplayable games.

with the upgraded system i can wait for better CPUs to go down in price a bit and buy the parts over time to spread out the budget.

The motherboards and processors for AM2 are pretty much the same price as the socket 939.  The  basic change is the memory controller on the chip and the memory on the motherboard, nothing that really drives the price up.  DDR2 memory is still at a premium price though.

Though I like the Athlon if I were going for a low end system to upgrade to a better CPU later I'd most likely look for a motherboard that can upgrade to the (intel) Core2Duo later.  Alternately an (AMD) AM2 board that will eventually take a quad core Athlon when they come out next year.

Just so long as you watch the CPUs though and are ready to grab before the higher grade 939 pin chips are all gone you should still do all right.

As a SETI member quad core combined with dual CPU is a dream come true.  Of course I don't know if current Windows versions will support quad core.  Windows XP Pro might support one quad core processor, I'm unsure.

I'm currently considering upgrading my gaming machine.  Since I use Windows 2000 Pro I can handle dual core but not quad core, I'm trying to decide if I should go with Core2Duo for maximum performance now or an Athlon X2 to allow upgrading to quad core later under Linux.  Once quad core is "needed" I expect to be totally off Windows unless Microsoft reforms (highly unlikely)
