Big Problem I Think ???
« on: August 21, 2006, 05:47:18 am »
I have DSL thru SBC Yahoo, I recently found 6 user sub-accounts in my account, I of course suspended them and e-mailed Yahoo of their existence. No one in the house would even no how to create them except for myself and I didn't do it !

I have SpySweeper and Panda AV, they are always on except when I play on the D2.

I have run complete sweeps with both of these and with Ad-Ware SE, and SpyBot.

We never open e-mail unless its from a known sender and they are all scanned for anything they may have.

I'm stumped as to what else I can do to prevent this from happening again, Crap !   I'm not sure how it happened to begin with.... >:(

Would appreciate any and all suggestions ....   :(

Thank You
C-Los, Commanding Officer U.S.S. Scorpion

#1 - How old are the kids?

#2 - What were the names, any clues in there?

Odds are very high that someone you know created the accounts.  Did you try logging into their webmail to see what they were sending?

Also who else knows your account password or who might be looking over your shoulder while you are typing it in.  Since they would need that to create those sub-accounts.  Also check for any types of spyware/keyloggers on your system.

Do you have a wireless network, and if so, do you have encription turned on?

Other things to consider if you have wireless is if you live in an apartment, have a neighbor within 100 feet, or a parking lot next to or across the street from you.  If you have at least one of those things you should encript your network and set passwords to keep others from creating accounts on your network without your knowledge.

Have ran all the spyware things I have and they've come up empty except for the usual cookies.

I'm not connected to any network, no router, and do not have wireless.

Log into the webmail page as those accounts (you can change their passwords from the master account) and see if they were sending emails (still should be in the outbox & stuff).  Might be some law enforcement action required.

If your router has wireless capability (as does the one I am using) you might want to make sure it is turned off if you aren't using it.

Hmmm...   Exactly what Dracho said.  By the names of the accounts (profiling alert!) you should be EXTREMELY cautious as to what's in your outgoing traffic.  We'd hate for you to have an unwelcome visit from Homeland Security.   :o

I'm sorry for coming in late to the party, but could you be a little more specific, C-Los?

Are you saying your SBC/Yahoo service showed six new Email accounts?  If so, this could be done from anywhere in the world with just your username & password, however they could have been obtained.

If you are saying that your computer shows six new Windows user accounts, THAT's another story and could be a sign of someone nosing around inside your local network, possibly through your wireless connection.

My own yahoo.com web-site account once had a unknown username & Email address show up in it which alarmed me, but I deleted it, it never came back and I stopped worrying about it.

These were sub-accounts that were listed below my Master Acc. .....

I have suspended all the accounts and contacted Yahoo, they are investigating them all and will inform the F.B.I. or whoever if they find any wrong doing. I asked to be kept informed of the investigation and they said they do not give out personal information about that sort of thing ....  LOL     It is my information isn't it ... ?

So after being suspended for 90 days their suppost to disappear ....  :)

My Thanks to Everyone ....

Yeah, that seems like it's the same issue I had with Yahoo, so it seems their security may not be as good as one would prefer.  I'm wondering how widespread the problem is.

The good news is that it means nobody was 'inside' your home network....
