Ya'll remember Wing Commander?
« on: August 20, 2006, 06:08:26 pm »
They redid it and it's FREE (Privateer of course). Man, I wish SFC could be redone like that. Imagine a server kit for Privateer!  ;D

It rocks! Brings back good memories too, but would be much more fun with a dyna.  ;D

I've had this for a while and it's great!  Prior to this I had to get Privateer working with DOSBox to get it to run under XP.

Prior to its shutdown by EA, Origin was supposedly working on Privateer Online.  It probably would have been a big hit, but EA didn't think so--development was shut down.

For all you PSP fans, EA is supposed to be coming out with a classic compilation.  Included on the UMD are Wing Commander and Wing Commander: The Secret Missions.  Not sure if they are a port of the PC version or the SNES version.

Would love to see Wing Commander resurrected on the PC or the next gen consoles!

Take your Tarsus and buy an afterburner at least, make a few good runs (You can outrun most ships) then you can buy a Galaxy freighter or a Centurion fighter.  ;D

I got my Galaxy almost maxxed out with all the expensive goodies you can buy. I want to buy the max shield system, 300k credits!  :o

My Taurus lasted me a very long time.  I think my most memorable run was when I decided to leave Troy and operate out of New Constantinople.  It took a helluva beating from pirates and retros, but I managed to make by the skin of my teeth!

That's what I loved about Privateer--very open-ended.  And the things you took for granted in Wing Commander (e.g. jump drives...system repair...weapons), you actually had to buy in Privateer.

IIRC there was a mission offered by pirates in the story line.  Successfully completing this mission you received a special cargo container that added something like 50 units to your cargo capacity and was undetectable to scans (think of the smuggling compartments on the Millenium Falcon)--very useful if you wanted to deal with not-so-legal cargo.

I met some pirates, including a female one, but I can't take all their missions right now as I'm running a lot of cargo, I want max shielding for my Galaxy.

I too had a super duper Tarsus.  ;)

Yo K, is there a command for the turrets to work automatically? I have 2 tachyon turrets and I swear they do not protect my rear at all.  >:( Meanwhile those Gothri turrets work fine.

If there is I can't remember it.  Try to setting to full guns and locking on your target.  I believe that's how some WC fighters were able to use rear turrets automatically.

What would be full guns command? I guess I need to print the manual, eh? That is the only problem I have had so far, otherwise it's a blast from the past.  ;D

Thanks for the rapid reply. I gotta make a few more runs, I want that 400 plus MJ shielding.  ;D

In Wing Commander, the "G" key would cycle between the individual gun types and full guns.  The "M" key would cycle between the different types of missiles.  The "L" key should activate target lock.  You'll know its on when the target reticule changes to a square instead of brackets and the target will be lit bold on the attack radar at all times.

I'll try the G command, other than that I've noticed that expensive autotracking equip works wonders.

Just be careful when you use full guns...it drains energy quick and the guns heat up fast, taking longer to recharge.  However if you line it up just right, it could be a one-shot kill, especially against pirates and retros.

My plasma guns rock, but my tachyon turrets suck arse. I'm gonna print the manual.  ;)

Well, with the code and everything being out there for free, I can only imagine a dyna that Bonk and Dave and others could cook up for us, if it's possible. I'll even host the server. It would be like an online Pirates except space based.

Just you guys beware... My Galaxy is not your average Galaxy starship.  ;D

Thanks for the link Jack.  I just added it to the Freely available and legal software thread in Engineering.

I wonder if anyone else had the Wing Commander II problem that I had.  I chose the callsign Shadow.  Very confusing results.

I'm gonna try out VegaStrike and the ST mod!  ;D

It's nice when you take the time to read the manual from Privateer, now my frigging expensive turrets work!

You can also enslave enemies! Muhahahahahahaha!  ;D
