Quick Wiring Question
« on: August 16, 2006, 09:57:43 am »
Does anyone recall which wires are the standard "First Pair, Second Pair" (For punchdown installation) etc in a CAT 5-e cable?

Yeah, that's it.  Thanks..

Pair 1 - Blue / Blue-white
Pair 2 - Orange / Orange-white
Pair 3 - Green / Green-white
Pair 4 - Brown / Brown-white

I'm replacing all of my Cat-3 phone cable with Cat-5E (Squirrels chewed it and my RG6 Coax cable, in the freakin walls) and decided to put a patch panel under the house.  Luckily, the installers didn't install it to code so it's not stapled to the joists.  I can tape the new cable to the old and just pull it up through the wall... and I intend to leave it that way for the "next time".

Just wanted to make sure I wired the punchdown block to "standard".. because that crap always comes back to haunt me later when I don't.  I swear my motto is becoming "Do the hard stuff first and do the hard stuff right the first time".

Too cool. I hope it works and the Extra shielding keeps the critters away.

Maybe you have an Idea for my situation. I can if I have too, run about 200 yards of Cat-5, but I really don't want to. Do you know of anyway, I can take an already exsisting Wireless router, and Boost the signal that far?

Several companies make "Wireless Signal Boosters".  Hawkwing makes one that CompUSA sells for about $75.  You could put one halfway between the points and see what happens.   You'd just need an extention cord and something to keep the weather off it.

Also, some companies sell a 12" replacement antenna for the back of the wireless card.  It generally offers about a 5dBi gain to reception.

I'll have to look into It then, as I could always mount it outside my well house, and come up with some Kinda protection. It would sure beat pulling Cat 5 through PVC and burying it that far.

200 yards is a bit far for cat5. You could probably buy a wireless signal booster.
