Too many rules... blah blah blah... Ok so how's about we toss them all but 4? Mog once wrote the only rules needed for a fun server are these:
Rule 1: Don't cheat.
Rule 2: Don't be a jerk
Rule 3: Don't exploit.
Rule 4: Have fun.
[/list]
Perhaps some of these rules are redundant. Technically, if there are no other rules, then how would one cheat?
- Neutral hex DV exploit (start the mission fly off the map, DV goes down. (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
- Too many enemies on? Forfeit missions repeatedly to crash the server repeatedly until they get frustrated and don't bother logging in any more. (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
- Write a bot that simply sends the right udp packets to update the hex DVs of your choice (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
- Eavesdrop on IRC channels to determine enemy locations and plans (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
- Use the gamespy CD key API buffer overflow exploit to crash the enemy clients of your choice. (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
- Draft dodge (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
I could go on...
The main problem is that some people feel they must fly battleships at all times. I am accustomed to direct tcp/ip games where my buddies and I would set the bpv limit to 999 so we can foozle around with various fleet combos until we have a matchup we like. One time a new player joined our group and would always take a BB under these circumstances. Needless to say he didn't last long.
You all know my opinion of the disengagment and anti-fleet rules.
Unfortunately, after all these years, it seems that we still cannot trust each other to be sportsmanlike and just play to have fun. Kind of a shame.
I like to login and play to my hearts content without having to remember and heed a boatload of rules. I do not want to fly a battleship. Light cruiser SFB CnC compliant fleet matchups are my favorite to fly over and over and over without having weird and illogical restrictions on how many battles you can have, where and with what, depending on whether you win or lose.
Perhaps its time for another light-cruiser hell (heaven for some) server from DH, I always liked that idea.
If people are not here to have fun then why would they be here at all? Personal vendettas and revenge? Sabotge of the honest players fun? I know there are some who would do this, there are a few extreme and insane enemies of Xenocorp that I still struggle to keep from hacking our servers on a daily basis that have made severly libelous public statements and submitted our domains to hacking botnet masters...
