Poll: Mog Day!
« on: August 13, 2006, 06:07:26 pm »
Too many rules... blah blah blah... Ok so how's about we toss them all but 4? Mog once wrote the only rules needed for a fun server are these:

    Rule 1: Don't cheat.
    Rule 2: Don't be a jerk
    Rule 3: Don't exploit.
    Rule 4: Have fun.

    [/list]

My thinking goes that there will never be a mainstream server with these 4 rules. Too many politics. But what if a sneaky admin snuck in just one day where the only rules would be those 4? That wouldn't be too bad. Just one game year of back to the basics... There wouldnt be enough momentum or time to change the overall strategy of the server, not for just a day, imo. But whatever one side devises, the other can respond in kind. It's essentially fair all around. So how 'bout it?

What do you guys think? I'm gonna go for year 2275. That's the year all the new toys come out.

Precisely... Would you rather the Klinks have the only BB, the B10?

I believe we dont need a No rules day on this server due to changes in mid-server, which has always proven to be a no-no.  Plan it for a server, sure, add it in mid-stride, no.  Plan it for the next server, perhaps even 1 day a week for the 3 week server, just dont drop it in the middle of a running one.

Great idea. SG7 will have one game year called Mog Day!

Perhaps some of these rules are redundant.  Technically, if there are no other rules, then how would one cheat?

I suppose if you were in the middle of a battle and suddenly discovered that you weren't having any fun, then by strict letter of the law you'd be cheating.......

We'd need a Happiness Patrol to enforce the law.

          - Neutral hex DV exploit (start the mission fly off the map, DV goes down. (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
          - Too many enemies on? Forfeit missions repeatedly to crash the server repeatedly until they get frustrated and don't bother logging in any more. (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
          - Write a bot that simply sends the right udp packets to update the hex DVs of your choice (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
          - Eavesdrop on IRC channels to determine enemy locations and plans (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
          - Use the gamespy CD key API buffer overflow exploit to crash the enemy clients of your choice. (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)
          - Draft dodge (Rules 1,2 and 3 broken)

          I could go on...

The main problem is that some people feel they must fly battleships at all times. I am accustomed to direct tcp/ip games where my buddies and I would set the bpv limit to 999 so we can foozle around with various fleet combos until we have a matchup we like. One time a new player joined our group and would always take a BB under these circumstances. Needless to say he didn't last long.

You all know my opinion of the disengagment and anti-fleet rules.

Unfortunately, after all these years, it seems that we still cannot trust each other to be sportsmanlike and just play to have fun. Kind of a shame.  :(

I like to login and play to my hearts content without having to remember and heed a boatload of rules. I do not want to fly a battleship. Light cruiser SFB CnC compliant fleet matchups are my favorite to fly over and over and over without having weird and illogical restrictions on how many battles you can have, where and with what, depending on whether you win or lose.

Perhaps its time for another light-cruiser hell (heaven for some) server from DH, I always liked that idea.

If people are not here to have fun then why would they be here at all? Personal vendettas and revenge? Sabotge of the honest players fun? I know there are some who would do this, there are a few extreme and insane enemies of Xenocorp that I still struggle to keep from hacking our servers on a daily basis that have made severly libelous public statements and submitted our domains to hacking botnet masters...

I like light cruiser and destroyer squadrons best.

A CC and a 0.5MC ship will yeild severely disadvantageous AI draws. Not a practical combo.

I appreciate the thought though.  :)

It's be an idea, if I ever get around to running KzCW it would defintely allow for fleet combos.
Again though for "serious" servers there's just to big a disparity in mission times and AI behavior between the races.

There are a few combos I'd like to try out though if DH is so kind as to do another Hell server..........

See?   Rules 2 and 3 have all the bases covered.   No need for rule 1.   We're down to only 3!   ;D

Don't really try to read anything serious into my earlier post.   It was just a lame attempt at trying to be funny, brought on by boredom with an inane, repetitive task (now finished, thankfully) and by my having access to a keyboard.  Those keyboards are dangerous things.

Dizzy's post reminded me of an old Hannah Barbarra cartoon I used to watch as a kid where all the characters were engaged in a road race, and the announcer said,  "This race has only one rule:  No Cheating!"  You knew the bad guys were going to cheat.  But my eight-year old brain spun over wondering how you can cheat if there are no rules to break.   It was a great mystery of life at eight years old.   ;)

          - A command variant the same size as the second ship up to CCH Class or a regular line ship of a larger hull class may lead a second regular line ship as long as the second ship's move cost is .5 or less.
          - Flying a 1 or .67 + a .5 move cost multi-ship fleet will count against your Max Heavy Iron Points as stated in the Heavy Iron section above, flying a .5 + .5 or less will not.

I'll compare those with what u have and see what is amiss.
