EGE design.net?
« on: August 10, 2006, 01:09:16 pm »
Just an odd question.. everytime I open some topics on the forums here I get a little pop up that wants a username and passwrod to log into
something called egedesign.net.

Since it doesn't really sound like a porn site I'm not sure why it'd be an ad on my system.
Anyone else get this?

Probably an image in someone's signature or something form a host that does not allow hotlinking.

What threads you seeing it in?

I do not have signatures on myself so I can actually browse the forums on this glacial connection.

I think it's Bartok. (or was... I don't get the prompt on viewing his profile)

This image is in his sig:

I received something like this about 1 week ago.  It coincided with my new connection to the SFC2.net forums.  I have since had some problems on my system but have been unable to connect it to anything that would do with my connection to SFC2.net forums.
In no way am I trying to blame them, or accuse or anything, but that was the only thing that I could think of that was changed.  I still connect to them regulary and I no longer see that pop-up.  :)

I just had a look at http://www.egedesign.net/ buts its flash only. So I will not look at it. It will take Bartok to explain what was happening here.

An image in a password protected webserver directory (or a password protected file) will not affect your system at all Dfly. Did the popup look something like what you get if you click on this link?:

Actually no.  I have had that one before and it never bothered me.  The one I received around that same time forced my system to not open properly(even with safemode) and I had to reset my whole system back (restore) to an earlier time just to get the system up and running.

You must be running IE and hit an activex exploit somewhere or something. (System restore is a bad policy in general as it can store viruses an trojans for you to restore ;))

I am on Dynaverse.net all day most days and have not had any problems. I can shut the server down for a full virus scan at some point, but I'm pretty sure it will come up empty as usual.

How do you know it was that prompt you saw that crippled your system, and what makes you think it came from Dynaverse.net? (not trying to be a dink here, just wanting to get to the bottom of this...)

I dont.  As I had stated, it just happened to be the last place I was when it popped up.

Guys -

Really Sorry about this.  It is my site where i've got the .sig image stored (couldn't link properly to the dynaverse.net one that Dallas did as it's on the ftop server).  Anyhow - the site does allow hotlinking and it was an isolated issue.  I got in touch with my host to let them know it was happening.  While i've got the ability to password protect directories I don't have any setup that way.  They were having security problems with all hosted sites on the machine mine was on.  It should be gone for good now:)

ThanX for your patience guys, Sorry it was a nuisance!

Bartok

btw - the site (top level) is basically a flash "business" card from when i was doing independent contract work)

Thanks for explaining that Bartok. No big deal, just nice to know where it was coming from.

Apologies for redirecting the downloads folder to the ftp server but we must do what we can to make the best of our bandwidth.

Sure thing -

It was wierd! -- I've been rethinking using this hosting company, problem is I'm on a yearly subscription so I won't be able to change till next March.  NP on the downloads folder, i understand completely.

Many ThanX
