Hexx's Life Lessons : The Fine Art of Server Proposals..
« on: August 21, 2006, 02:43:03 pm »
I was going to send this as a PM to DH, but thought I'd share my wisdom with you here.
(That and he's somehow put a block on my PM's..)

I've noticed a few server proposals floating around recently, none with any real amount of answers or replies to them.

As I've likely proposed far more servers than any 3 of you put together, I thought I'd share some of my wisdom.

Polls don't work.
Polls are useful fro making fun of people, and occasionally making yourself seem like you're interested in something you're not.
That's about it.
Polls are far too much like voting, and I believe that the US is one of the few countries with an on average lower voter turn out than Canada.

Instead simply jot down a few ideas of what you'd like to do, and- and this is the single most important thing about the process-
Put a hook or a line in like " I was talking to Dizy, and he told me this would never work.."

By using this, you've now created your antagonist. (All servers need one). In this case our (fictional) character of Dizy can be presumed to be a loud talking-under performing player with delusions of grandeur. Players will instinctively decide that anything Dizy dislikes must be good. They will happily log off servers after parking their 3xBB fleet to post about how much they support your idea of cheese reductions because Dizy was against it.
They will also assume that you mean the rules or changes your talking about apply only to other people, after all, there were squadrons of BB's in WW2, so obviously it's OK on a server.

<sorry phone, more later>

I think keeping the game fresh is the way to go. It'll attract new players and possibly bring back old ones.
New missions ( Dave doin awesome with that btw :thumbsup:), maybe some new ship skins (sometimes a change of appearance can do wonders!) and maybe a tech race like in RDSL w/ hints and secrets.

I realize this is hard work and appreciate the effort from all involved with putting on servers!

Cheers! :drinkinsong:
