SFC 1 Compatible Planet Textures
« on: August 01, 2006, 10:41:42 am »
At one time, there were quite a few (and I should also say, rather cool) planet textures usable in SFC 1.

I do recall taking a texture or two from John Stone's Refit Spacedock and using MS Paint to convert from .bmp to .pcx.  Unfortunately the version with Win XP doesn't do that conversion anymore.

Are there any of these old SFC 1 compatible planet textures available around anymore?

(I had to reinstall it due to a HD failure and while I haven't gotten to re-modding all the ships [boy, is this going to take a while!!], the original stock planet skins were... funky... especially Jupiter.

I found the compatible textures for Earth and Jupiter in my old models collection, but does anyone know of the whereabouts of those for the other planets (Moon, Saturn, Mars, others)?

I figure YOU'RE the guys who would know best!

Sorry I haven't seen any, however I did see a weapon textures pack for SFC 1 at Battleclinic. And I am now releasing all my ships with SFC 1 versions  ;)

This might come across as a stupid question - but I am going to ask it anyway because this has been bugging me for some time now!
What's the pull of playing SFC1 over SFC2?
Graphically speaking it's inferior, but as seen as I don't think I even have the discs anymore... and if I do they are scratched beyond use... I can't even remember the difference in the game model - just that it can't support light maps and uses the ancient pcx format for textures!

For the ships at least, you can use standard *.bmp format textures, I am sure the same is true for the planets.

@ Smiley, you have good points, however, I know for myself, playing SFC1 helps me remember events surrounding the first time I played SFC, the friends I knew, the music I listened to, the job I worked at. It has tons of setimental value to me.  I am sure many people will say the same.

Smiley-

Half a reason- superior mission scripts.

The other half- I totally destroyed my EAW, OP and SFC3 installations and really don't feel like putting in the megatime needed to re-mod them to the way I had them (TOS, TMP, TNG mods for SFCs 1, EAW, and OP).

And now, I lost my SFC 1 installation, so I'm really starting from ground zero all over again... and the missions were the reason why I started with SFC 1.  Maybe in thirty years, I'll get 'em all back the way I want.

IM-

No, the .bmp textures for some reason aren't read by the game engine... but I can check again... maybe I messed something up.

The simplest of graphics programs (although not paint anymore) can read and write pcx files if need be - that way you can just download planet textures for any game and re-save them as picx files.
Gimp is a good example, and is of course, free, in all meanings of the word.

Yeah, you're right.  I can use my graphical program that I use normally for my photos, too.

I wonder whaddup wit' Microsoft on that one!

Dropping support for an obsolete format? I cannot imagine... hehe ;)

IrfanView is a free program you can use to convert .BMP to .PCX, TGA and pretty much anything else you may need.

Cool, guys.

The only downside is that I have to go and convert them.
