I am trying to share files between two computers. I have Xp home on one, XP Pro on the other. Both running service pack two. I'd like to avoid buying a USB drive big enough for the main file I want to share (1 gig). So I've made sure that both comps have networking support installed (from the XP disk), and I'm trying to share the file, but having no luck. Does anyone here have advice? I'd like to avoid buying anything new for the computer... considering I don't have any money to do that.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice.

How are you connecting the two computers?

Eternet? Are you connecting them directly or though a hub/router?

Do you have file/print sharing enabled on both computers? Did you enable sharing of specific directories?

Simple explaination ahead

Assuming you have a home network (router/cable-dsl)

Place both machines into the same workgroup

Go to the PC with the file(s) you want to share.  Share the folder the file(s) are in. 

Go to the other PC:

start/run \\PCNAME\DirectoryOfShare$

Turn off "simple file sharing" on the XP home box.  In the windows exploer, "Tools"..."Folder Options"..."View Tab"... Uncheck "Use simple filesharing" and "apply to all folders" button and "apply" and "OK". Do the same on the Pro box. Bloody MS had to neuter the networking on the home version... 
You will need to connect as the Pro user from the Home box to any shares on the pro box. (or create a user the on the Pro box witht he same credentials as the active user on the home box...)

That would explain why I had to jump through some hoops when hooking up my GF's XPh laptop; and more hoops when i was building my sisters XPh box.

Also, keep in mind that XP SP2 will refuse remote access for any user account that is not password protected.  So the machine you are connection from must be trying to connect using a user account that exists on the machine you are trying to connect to, and it must have a password.

Thanks. I connecting with a cable that I am told is a networking cable... looks like a phone plug, only a bit wider. I'm going through the setup wizard again, and I've found strangely (or I'm just forgetting) that the last time I did it, it didn't ask me if IU wanted to enable file sharing.... which seems odd. Anyway, I am connecting basically from modem to modem. I see, though, that there are two modem jacks. Tomorrow (when I'm off, and have some sleep), I'll try that again.

Thanks. So the idea of opening up 'my computer' on the receiving computer (if that makes sense) and seeing a new drive that is in essence the 'sending' computer (the laptop) is not going to happen. I thought that'd be great.

Thanks Bonk. Doing that first thing tomorrow morning (it's been a long day and week, and I'm beat ...) I'll check back in. See, what it is, is I downloaded a beta version of Star Wars Battlefront 2, but it's on my laptop, which runs OP fine, but lacks the graphics for Battlefront. So I need to get that 1 gig file to the desktop which has the graphics and everything else to run the Beta..... and this is to save me paying money I don't have for a game I'm interested in.

This will probably not work.  If you are going directly from one computer to the other, a basic network cord won't work.  You would need a 'crossover cable', which looks the same but would be wired differently.  Also, if you're plugged directly in from one computer to the other and your network cards are set to receive their IP addresses through DHCP on startup, they will not be able to talk to a DHCP server so you would have to specify IP addresses manually...

It sounds like it's getting a bit complicated for just sharing files...  Either pick up a cheap router or use a thumbdrive might be a better solution at this point.

Hey, thanks. I really appreciate that. It is essentially for sharing a single one gig file. I mean, my wife won't play any games with me on a network, because she loses once and quits, you know? So I'll save my nickles and dimes for that thumb drive. Thanks again.
