Glad to say I'm still alive :D
« on: July 25, 2006, 05:22:05 am »
Went camping... and as some of you know the Sierra Mountains are fairly steep.... Well the breaks on our RV went out, but luckily my pops was able to put her in first gear and turn the engine off (old RV, so breaks still worked... what was left of them), so we coasted down the mountains at about 10mph...

Hehe.

I think its time for a new RV.  ::)

Glad you're OK Sky and also that it was Dad doing the driving instead of Mom.  ;) ;)

Always take note of the run-away truck ramps.

Gee... I think I would have rather WALKED down... I cant say what your dad did was too smart. I saw this TV show when I was a kid about this kid's parents in their RV that accidently slid off a cliff while camping and the thing flattened to a pancake when it hit. The kid ran down the mountain to the bottom and his folks were dead. Terrified me silly of parkin on hills and cliffs forevermore.

No run-away truck ramps... The road is basically used by loggers... it used to be the only way to get from Georgetown to Foresthill... but with the highway now... anyway, a lot of good camping spots up there, but there are no run-away ramps...

We don't know what happened... The breaks gave out going 30mph on a long downhill stretch... on our right was a deep drop.... on the left was the cliff... not much you can do other than what he did ;)

I've had break lines break. People don't realize the pressure at the calipers.

BTW, anyone here been to Pikes Peak?

When coming down, you'd better know how to down shift.

Probably... They were working fine... we stopped for a few minutes (about 15 or so), and got back ont he road and after about 60 seconds the pedal almost went to the floor...

I just had an experience similar though not as dangerous, maybe.  I was out north in the bush some 85 km away from the nearest town with my truck.  Upon return, some 20 or so km from closest town my brakes went out.  I thought, "oh well, at least I can get myself to town if I take it slow and cautious as there is no traffic out here."..  Turned the next corner and blew the front right tire.  That slowed the trip down quite some bit.
Turns out the right rear brake line ruptured and all my fluid was gushing out while I was replacing the tire.  Someone happened along and offered to go into town to buy some brake fluid for me(really nice).  He left, turns out that town was closed for Sunday(about 300 peops) so he had to go down the highway to the next town.  He bought me 2 bottles of fluid and returned.  This would at least get me home(about 100 km away) with roughly 10% brakes working.  Nicest part:  HE REFUSED FOR ME TO PAY FOR IT.  He drove away to make sure I could not give him money.
I have often helped others on the road when they have problems and perhaps he was one of the ones I or someone else helped at one time or another so he repaid it to me.

Cost me a bundle when I got back as I bought 4 new tires and fixed the brakes, but that is my business.
