There once was a SFC fan with his own website, Troy (H.??) Cheek who had old SFC disks for sale, but I think he's no longer in SFC stuff; might still be worth a try though.

Does anyone know the legality of simply making a copy of this game, seeing as it's so old now and out of print?

Dunno... Taldren and Interplay (they were the two parties involved in SFC1 correct) are out of business, aren't they?

You can't just make a copy and distribute it.

How about Ebay? I've seen numerous copies of it there.

Or Amazon.com:

#1 on that list:

Star Trek: Starfleet Command
by Interplay (CD-ROM )
Windows 98 / 95 / Me
ESRB Rating: Everyone
Avg. Customer Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(Rate this item)

Usually ships within 1-2 business days
   Used & new from $0.50

Usually see better prices there for various SFC versions and I'd tend to trust it more than ebay.

Hmmm... got some other interesting hits on that search...:
Star Trek: Starfleet Command Gold Edition
Star Trek: Starfleet Command Neutral Zone
Star Trek Starfleet Academy Strategic Command
Star Trek Commander's Edition

All interplay, I'd heard of the Gold Edition but none of these others...

Also this from Viacom:
Star Trek Deep Space Nine 9: Harbinger ~ Special Edition in Custom Case (PC CD-Rom)
