virus checkers and firewalls up to date?

also, steer clear of the pr0n sites, those will gum your machine up too.

icq, bearshare, emule and limewire with no firewall?  :o  :puke:

All of those applications just scream "smack me around - I want it".

I would reccomend not using any of those, uninstalling them all if possible. If not, then a windows reinstall is in order and don't let that crap touch your machine ever again.

If you can manage to get them all completely uninstalled or completely under control, run more than one virus scanner on your machine , Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Wndows Antispyware/Defender and a Trojan scanner then see if your system stabilises. You should also disable the windows messenger service to stop those types of popups. (not the MSN messenger, though I reccomend uninstalling that too).

However before you go to those extremes, you may want to just run a full memory test in the bios to ensure your memory is still good, if its gone bad it could cause his kind of behaviour.

P2P unchecked = plethora of viruses, rootkits, trojans and spyware. If you insist on running them, lock down your system completely with good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software.

Don If your not using that PC that often, It might be just as well to go ahead and just do a Format - Reinstall. Of course grab any important info first, But man, On something like that, just take it back to the basics.

To reinforce what Bonk already said, a Firewall is an absolute MUST, especially if you use filesharing software!!!
Think of it this way.  P2P filesharing is like sleeping with several strangers, and not using a firewall is like not using any protection.
