What rifle had a longer range then the Brown Bess?

The brown bess was a musket, accurate to about 50 yards. It was prefered by line infantry regiments because it was faster to load than the rifled musket, which you are looking for the name of... and I don't know it... dammit!
Read all the Sharpe books, don't recall them calling it anything other than "rifle".

There were at least two rifles that were used during the period of the Brown Bess and maybe more since the Brown Bess was used for over 100 years 1722 - 1838. Since I cheated to check my thoughts I won't say what your's is however, the other rifle I know of is the Ferguson Rifle which was breach (!) loaded and was in use during the American Revolution.

Only problem with this question is that the Brown Bess is not a rifle, it is a smooth bore. Any muzzle loading rifle would/could out shoot a Brown Bess.

and yes the Brown Bess was very inacrrurate up to 50yds.

I did cheat on the rifle part however, the units were the 95th and the 60th.

This brings up a new trivia question. What was the name of the 60th?

Hmmm ok Now first off - Don't know how Pig didnt remember this -- I read the books and have 8-9 of the 14? DVD's --

Baker Rifle -- Used by the 95th Rifles? and well the second unit to use them??? Hmm Obviously the Green Jackets which were just skermishers.. as for a specific unit??? I would say Prince of Wales own which Shapre also led but no they mainly used the old smooth bore bess..

I'd have to agree with Postman on this..especially since the original question didn't seem to have a time limit on when it could be. My first thoughts pertained to troops in WWI and what they used...but refrained since I figured that wasn't what you really where after...

BUT...there actually are a LOT of answers to the question, including weapons today....

Just a thought.

are you just looking for British made arms? because during the end of the riegn of the brown bess there came the Kentucky long rifle and the Springfield rifle of the american civil war which was fairly accurate up to 150 yards

i beleive Postman is correct the brown bess is classified as a smooth bore musket not a rifle.

Oh crap.. I think the Kentucky Rifle was War of 1812..er.. actually, that's when the term came into use. The Kentucky/Pennsylvania rifled musket prototype appeared in 1725, so it would have been deployed by rangers on the American side, but you mean British..

I do recall the unit you are mentioning, one of the sharpshooters had George Washington in his sights once, and didn't kill him because it wasn't a sporting shot.

Since you guys cant seem to remember I will tell you.

The 95th rifles and the 60th rifles were in Portugal and Spain.

The both used the Baker Rifle.

The 60th is also known as the Royal American Regt.
