Now what the hell is this thing?
« on: June 22, 2006, 04:50:22 pm »
Found this ugly bug in my brothers workshop, no one seems to know what the hell it is.
It looks like part butterfly, part hornet and part moth or whatnot.

Why was the first thing that popped in my mind, was the old Steve Martin Bill Murray skit.

Oh I know what that is...

Why that's a radio-active mutant moth, of course.  I suspect Mackie is hiding the fact that since being stung he has two suspicious little nubs growing on his back, and has an extreme fondness of bright lights.  Just be sure to post pics of your costume once you decide to use your new found abilities for good (or bad).

Looks like you found a type of Hawk Moth.

I have my aunt looking at it, she says it looks like it is in the bee or wasp family from first glance.  She says she can get it down to family probably, but needs clearer pictures than that for better identification.

She says it is te order of Hymenoptera, which includes Sawflies, Ichnemons, Chalcids, Ants, Wasps, and Bees.  Just from a quick glance.

However she emphasizes that this is a quick guess from a blurry picture.  She's a conservation biologist, but she can't identify it that quickly which indicates she hasn't actually seen this one that much...

That hardest thing is that it looks like it has one set of wings, but normally Hymenoptra has four wings instead of two...otherwise it seems to fit that profile.  It could have an underwing however like some bees.  If she could see the wings in detail (she'd have to see it clearly with the definitions of the splits and lines in the wings) to make a much more accurate analysis.

The other order it would fill in would be the flies which would be called the diptera, though that might mean that was a Bite instead of a sting.  Now that she looks at it more she thinks it's more likely diptera than Hymenoptra, especially if it only has two wings.

From my understanding, a bee dies after it stings. A wasp can sting several times.

Thats teh best explantion this far, as far as i know the bastard had 2 rather hard wings, no bettter photos though because they were taken with phone cam :/

It's a hammerhead salamander that escaped along with your Chernobyl friend!  ;) Seems they like Finland.

BTW Mackie, does Finland really have grass and yards and stuff? I dunno, is why I'm asking. All I know about Finland is they kicked every invader's arses.

Grass and yadrs and stuff? I do not quite understand your question :D
Here are some grassy yards and stuff and OLD underground dwellings :p

I intent to build my house like that one day :D

And as for finland in general, theres some history to it I suppose, we been here for the last 25 000 + years, we were even included in catholic churches prayers which were against us :D
"A horribile Haccapaelitorum agmine libera nos, Domine".
Hakkaa päälle pohjan poika (Strike on, sons of the north) was the warcry where the prayer came from :D

anyways, to continue about that bug, it left a small red mark on my arm where it bit/stung. right now its not so smal and its infected and pushing out puss. (not too badly though, looks alot like what a bees sting would have done)
However im quite allergic to bees and their ilk and im not having any of that swelling and sh*t that I do from bee stings.
