Why 2 shiplist.txt + Bonk ?
« on: June 16, 2006, 09:33:42 am »
Why is the shiplist.txt in two spots in OP?

I mod the one under assets\specs and all is good

I notice another under metassets.

Is each used for different things?   Is one a backup?  What gives?

Bonk,..  I have been using the Ship Edit with no issues, I remember you warning me that it is,.. sometimes bad and inserts blank stuff.   Any chance you have any more info.  For example does it do that during a particular operation, say like importing a .exp, or maybe when creating a new ship or copying one ?

After moding the ship list I have play tested my stuff and it all seems to work.  Hence why I am confussed

Thanks

IIRC the one in metassets is only used in the single player campaign.

When modding OP it is best practice to replace the shiplists in both locations (backing up your originals of course).

Shipedit will incorrectly add spaces to the shiplist occasionally, but the big offense is partially duplicating records on the same line - which I suspect only occurs sometimes when the comment feature is used, it is not implemented quite correctly.

You can confirm by loading your shiplist as tab delimted text in excel and check for ship records that have more columns than the rest with data duplicated from the correct columns. You can also use excel to search for incorrect spaces by searching for a single space and tell it to match whole cells only. (empty cells should be empty, they should not contain a space)

You may not encounter these issues as it may be due to the way that some people use ShipEdit. (adding spaces and comments somehow).

Keeping this in mind, Shipedit is quite handy for modding a shiplist because it has all the weapon locations and UIs correct. Though IIRC it may have some YFA/YLA and BPV issues.

Just be sure to QA your shiplilst with excel if you intend to use it for a Dynaverse server or offer it for download as a mod.
