Bill Gates to Relinquish Duties at Microsoft in 2008

HANOI — Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said after the bell Thursday that Chairman Bill Gates will transition out of a day-to-day role in the company to spend more time on his global health and education work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The company announced a two-year transition process to ensure that there is a smooth and orderly transfer of Gates' daily responsibilities, and said that after July 2008 Gates would continue to serve as the company's chairman and an adviser on key development projects.

Microsoft said Chief Technical Officer Ray Ozzie will immediately assume the title of chief software architect and begin working with Gates on all technical architecture and product oversight responsibilities, to ensure a smooth transition.

Similarly, Chief Technical Officer Craig Mundie will immediately take the new title of chief research and strategy officer and will work with Gates to responsibility for the company's research and incubation efforts; Mundie also will partner with general counsel Brad Smith to guide Microsoft's intellectual property and technology policy efforts.

Well I am partially suprised at this, since he is relatively young.. but since a lot of people dont like microsoft, I bet it will be welcomed news to some, and terrible news to others...I doubt though that Microsoft will change much with him stepping down.

Actually a little worried by this and my sentiments seem to be mirrored by the fact that Microsoft stock went down a bit after Gates announcement.  But I think that Microsoft will get worse not better when Gates leaves and Balmer takes over.

Balmer and most of the rest of the board was involved in all of the illegal activities of the past the has Microsoft in so many lawsuits world wide (and so many convictions already).  I think the whole board needs to be gone (including Gates not being Chairman) so that a new group can come in that is not already tainted and can change direction.  I don't think that Gates will allow it but I believe it to be needed.  I would love to see Gates sell his stock and leave the company behind altogether.  As is I think that Balmer and Gates will see that the company continues on its illegal paths until it is destroyed (or at least crippled) - which is bad for everyone.
