The Genre or the Engine?
« on: June 14, 2006, 08:32:25 pm »
I have found that my interest has switched from the SFC the game to the models.  I love to see non-canon designs and ships from other genres.  As my version of choice is SFC:OP there is a lot of room for expansion ;D.  I know that there are several other good games out there with very active modelling communities, such as Freelancer, that do not have a specific genre but I like the SFC engine.

Intersteller Machine's Terra Prime mod and his ideas about new races started me thinking about these questions:

Should this forum be about modeling for the SFC engine or Star Trek modeling?
Is the discussion of the new HW2 BSG mod off-topic?
Should there be a separate place for discussions of non-trek related SFC modeling?

What do the long time members and administrators think?

Opinions anyone?

There's always someone to port it so I don't see how it matters. There are already ships shown here that end up in BC before anything else, such as the BC2 vessels, which are intended for something in the future that is neither BC nor SFC yet nobody complains and they end up here anyways. Armada as well. I guess if we're going to try and work toward making a trek community that is a single unit instead of fiercley devided by game it shouldn't matter.

Exadvent, you prefer SFC OP? That is great! You will be happy to know that I am quite a ways into a port of my Terra Prime mod to OP. This version you can play as any of the 9 races on in a campaign.  If anyone is interested, I have gotten bogged down in the spec files, currently all ships are just geometry replacements. I am open to anyone out there with specing ability willing to work with me to get the specs up to spec  ;)

Anyway, my opinion is that this board should be about models specifically designed for the SFC engine, be it B5, SG1, Trek, BSG, SQ DSV, or World War 2 airplanes and blimps (given alot of thought to that one).  I prefer not to see high resolution models unless it is a discussion on how to SFC it. I personally would prefer to see more original concepts, you can only throw two warp engines and a saucer together so many ways, and most have been exhausted years ago.

Very well said  ;)

I guess that I was not real clear with my post to start this thread. :-[ :-[

I was trying to see what people on this forum felt about it being used to discuss NON-TREK related modeling for the SFC engine.

I agree that a strong trek modeling community regardless of game is a great goal, and should be pursued.

To me the responses from Starforce2 and ModelsPlease seem to indicate that this forum should be focused on trek modeling, but I may be wrong about that.  Their posts did not specifically say that, and I do not want to put words in their posts.

Well, I guess I mainly care about trek modeling. Don't get me wrong, SW, and B5 are both cool, but the games really were not designed for that type of ship physics and weapon and fighting style. I'm not saying the stuff shouldn't be here, some of the stuff made is darn good. While I'm not interested in seeing or using the stuff ingame, if someone did a good job on a particular ship I like such as a shiny noobian or a membari battleship I'll certainly stop and look.
